Cse removal XS1100 E, 1978. I was able to get the lower case off by tilting it a bit to get it around the guide pin under the rotor. But I cannot get the lower case back on with that guide pin in its hole. But with the guide pin removed I can get the lower case installed. Is that guide pin necessary? I do not have the rotor remover and had found the usual puller will not fit into the surround for the removal. Thanks.

The cases do hold the main bearings.
A few thousandths off the wrong way might make a difference.
But to answer your question...I don't know...just doesn't sound like a good idea.
Generator rotor can be a hassle to get off.
All but one I've taken off required both a puller and heat.

You NEED to remove the ROTOR to be able to put the cases back together without damaging the seal on the rotor side of the crank. There is a "lip" in the casing that hangs up on the crank seals edge / flange that makes joining the cases VERY difficult if the rotor is not removed. The cases will come apart with the rotor in place but going back together is not the same because the edge / flange of the seals are flexible and bend during removal. You would have to be able to get in there to feed the seal edges / flanges back into place during assembly. It is most likely the seals that are preventing a smooth assembly. The other option is to put the cases together without the crank seals in place and use FACTORY seals that have no edges / flanges on them.
The locating pins are needed!! They to keep everything in line down the sides of the cases where the engine covers and gasket will be attached. The pins keep everything proper vertically across the upper and lower half's.
