Yeah, I get that ALOT !!! I just checked, that 4 min vid was compressed to about 9.5MB, the 1 minute is about 2.5MB, hopefully that won't stress your broadband connection....if you have one?? I editted my post and added the direct link to the 2nd video.

        Awesome Video

        Hi TC
Impressive video especially the 2nd one.I found that interesting..and I will apply what saw to what to what I will see when I dive into Madmax's CARBS!I am almost certain my slides are not doing what they should be....also .I have known for a while that there is rust in the gastank $###!I must remedy that as well..and before or simultaneously with the carb rebuild.I do not know how to remedy the gastank... I am all ears...LOL
I must admit when I returned for the first time today to this forum I was rather surprised to see the dedication of my own thread on this topic.Like oh gee now the whole world knows..LOL..For all the years I rode this bike I never really was aware of this forum and Yamaha "community".I am just learning...alot abt you all and abt our bikes. It makes riding Madmax more exciting than it had been for a numbr of years.I am all the richer for your sharing your knowledge, expertise, insight and experience.I will endeavor to do the same whereever possible in my humble way.

          Hi Max,

There are almost as many threads on here about cleaning gas tanks as cleaning carbs....LOL.... Try a search, but be prepared to spend a while reading..... ther are MANY different approaches!

I tend to remove the fuel cocks (to protect the fabric filters!), blank the resulting holes, and add a couple of pints of paraffin and a couple of handfuls of hardware.

If the rust is minor, try ball-bearings (1/4"?)

If it is medium, try M6/M8 nuts,

If it is 'Orrible, try the nuts, but add a handful of pointy sheet-metal screws (1 1/2"?)...... In all cases, Stainless is best!

Give it a good shake (Like, till your arms stop working......), dump and replace the solvent, and shake again!

          Repeat until bored.........

Then remove ALL the hardware, flush and inspect..... Use a flashlight, not a match.

Be prepared to repeat again if it does not pass inspection.

Once it is OK, either put it back into use straight away, OR stick in a half-pint of light oil, and turn the tank around until it is coated ALL over; it will rust quick.

However, the BIG TIP is to count the hardware IN, then count it OUT!........ Make absolutely SURE it is all gone! The pointy screws in particular can lodge in odd places and reappear later...... Don't ask how I know.....

            Hi Alan;
Interesting method to get rid of the rust...I actually did a search for this and came up empty...so to say....LOL...Lots of stuff to do to Madmax ....From mounting my new Windjammer IV..to gastank cleanout and carb rejetting and replacing the 2 gearsets in the tranny....Madmax should have an awesome year!

              Hi Max,

There are definitely a number of posts on this subject; Many have tried (and recommended!) assorted "generic" chemicals...acids, etc, other have used "branded" cleaners,.... still others swear by chemical "tank liners" while others swear at 'em. Many have tried radiator shops; some with success.......

Many of these things lose a bit in translation from over here, and others are outside my personal experience.

Once again, I can only speak about what I have done, and I have had no joy at all with "snake-oil" remedies for rust..... in tanks, or anywhere else! Our weather here means that we get a LOT of rust, which is why my SG came from Colorado...... LOL, LOL!

It would appear that there is nothing good abt dooing this job...the devil is in the details...I wpuld much rather spend my time adressing other issues,,,but it doesnt make any sense to do the carbs and not do the tank...looks like the devil and i are gettin togeteher...I'm gonna help him take that rust straight to Hell....LOL...combined withthe carbs and tranny fix and Madmax will be born-again...amen brother....

TopCat > "DiverRay" has a 12/31/07 posting on here~~the posting directed primarily to you~~the last part of the posting he says: "......There is ALSO a washer you need to put in on the CLUTCH mechanism between the crank and the clutch......."

I've been getting ready to get ready, for several months, to put all new steels and new friction plates and new springs in this bomb~~will probably get going on it within the week. Have been eyeballin' your pictorial slash tutorial for some time; half the pictures are on the wall. Thank you, thank you for that pictorial.

"The washer" > ?? is he talking about a washer after cases are dismantled, or during the clutch basket work?

I'd been off here since last November; got wayyyy behind. Really still in shock about finding out about Bob Jones. Picked up on that yesterday. I was book No. 161. Had it on my "to do" list to go see him.

                  ....the "washer" ~~ ??

                    Hey Carlton,

Welcome back! There are 2 washers, one thrust washer that is against the inside engine case on the clutch shaft BEFORE you put the basket on the shaft. There is a second thrust washer that is INSIDE The basket between the inside of the basket and the clutch boss assembly, and it likes to slide out of place, hence the tip to use the star plate bolts and springs to slightly compress the boss assembly and new plates/steels together to help hold the inner thrust washer as well as the steels/frictions in place to make remounting the whole clutch basket assembly back onto the shaft without hanging up! I thought the pictorial showed and referenced both washer!?

heh, heh; I guess I'm confused. I thought the way he was saying it, that it was an "add-on"~~like the "added washer" spacer that sometimes is done on the second gear fix. Something that was not there originally~~like " an extra steel plate". I bet he's not talking about the washers in your pictorial.
