  • Taking the 1978 XS engine apart

I have an old engine with the tranny stuck someplace. The engine is out and on a table where I can get at it easily. I took out the upper and lower engine bolts and am now ready to separate the cases. Any suggestions for me? This will be my first time but since the engine is no good the way it is, if I goof up it won't really matter. I am using an ebay manual for the 1978 XS1100 etc. The book has really good photos and instructions. I have masked tape the #s on all the bolts so that I can put them all back the way they came out in bags marked upper and lower case bolts.

You can do it your way, but the easiest way for me was to get a piece of cardboard and punch 34 ( I think) holes in it and number the holes. Seems like there was two # 11's on a couple motors I have done... don't know if they are all that way. Just stick the appropriate bolt into the hole... no need to keep upper and lower bolts seperate. Make sure to take off the 4 screws for the plastic cover where the big vent tube hooks to for the middle drive. There's a bolt under there.

The rotor and timing plate will have to come off as well as a few other things. Just follow the line of the two cases and remove what's in the way. Also... remember to drain your middle drive first!! That's some stinkin' grease sometimes!

As a matter of fact.... Pull the middle drive off after draining and make sure that it is not the culprit instead of the tranny...

If you do split the cases, it will likely be pretty stuck together with old Yamabond. I like to get it started using a couple points and a screw driver lightly prying up and down here..

A rubber malet may come in handy at this point. Don't go hog wild, but you will need to be forcefull. Just be careful what you pry on/against.

Follow the manual. You'll be fine.

Ask questions if you have them.

      Stuck tranny?

Probably no need to split the cases. Most tranny work can be done from the bottom by removing the pan and side cases. Do a search here about 2nd gear repair and you will find out how to take the tranny apart that way.

left side above shift lever 2
"oil nozzle" held to cases with three thorex screws.

          Tranny repair XS1100 1978

I need to find the gear that has missing teeth. There are a coup-le in the bottom of the oil pan. Am going to split the cases today. Thanks for the 3 suggestions.
