One questions, both intake and exhaust valves are double springed, does it matter which way up the springs are fitted?

Yes,

The springs are coiled slightly tighter on one end. It's kind of hard to tell, but look carfeully and you'll see it. The tighter end goes down, toward the valve head.

Well, as the weekend was nice weather, I got stuck into the rebuild, and Sunday afternoon the beast ran!

Took a while for the fuel to get through but eventually picked up on all 4 cylinders, smoked quite a bit but cleared after about 10 minutes then settled down quite nicely.

The hardest bit was getting the airbox back on, not much room down there.

Now to sort the electrics.
