Speedometer question

A few days ago I noticed that my tripometer and odometer weren't working, but the speedo was. I have a 160 mph speedo. Upon disembowelling it I discovered that the worm gear on the input shaft (the one the speedo cable drives) was stripped as well as the gear on the cross shaft that the input shaft drives. I was able to cannablize the cross shaft from an 85 mph speedo, but could not remove the input shaft, as it is securlely peened into the frame of the speedo's innards. My question is what limits the speedo to read only to 85 mph as compared to 160 mph. Is it the coil spring that is attached to the shaft that drives the needle itself, or is there more to it? Is it the spinning magnet that makes the difference? Can I change out the spring on an 85 speedo with one from the 160? Does anybody know how to remove the input shaft from the frame without destroying it? I want to keep my 160 speedo, as it was on the bike when I bought it, and it shows the actual milage that I have put on the bike. The mileage was at 26,***, and it now shows 15,***, and I want to see it turn 26,*** miles again, meaning that I put 100,000 miles on the bike, and my ass, since I restored it back in 92. That speedo is one of the few parts that haven't been replaced since I bought it. Most everything else has been replaced due to the wreck, or because of normal failure or a cosmetic upgrade.

Along these lines

I have found that it is easy to lube the gears you are talking about and I recommend that we all do that. Just pull out the plastic part that holds the sensor for the self canceling turn siglnals and apply some grease on the gears which are right under the sensor. The plastic holder just snaps in place there and the gears are just under it and easy to get at.
