I know that this has come-up before, and I DID try the "search" tab,..... but can anyone offer any information for the original color name and/or formula for my 1980 Special?
The side covers are just black, but the tank is black with red flake. I can not tell if the flake is in the paint, or the clearcoat.
It is a nice subtle look that I would really like to duplicate.
    thanks,
    Mike

The side covers should be red metal flake as well, I sold an NOS one here a year or so ago, and it was red-metal flake. There was also blue, silver and gold metal flake in the black on various years and models. If looking for paint try www.colorrite.com they don't list all the paint, you have to call them, I did for my 80 standard and got the paint even though it was not listed.

Talked to Color Rite last week and they did not have
the paint for my 81. Black/Blue.
Talked with local PPG place and they have the computer
to scan my paint and match it. Guess thats the route Im going.

Picked up my paint today. Looks like a very good match.
Will know better after the bike is painted here in about a
month. 28bucks for a pint. Im happy with the price.

Captjerry, Did you have Color rite do the computer match as you had planned, or did you buy it elsewhere?

No it was the local PPG supplier.
Colorrite told me they didnt have the paint.
From what I understand most of the larger paint
            distributors have this ability.

captjerry, is the color you are calling Blue/Black Yamaha's Indigo Blue?

It is a very deep blue with greenish flakes when view in direct sun light, otherwise looks black?

If so, I would be very interested in the PPG formula. I tried to have my local PPG place computer scan my color and the could not get it write.

              Thanks,

                CaptJerry,

I too, have an '81SH with black/blue paint and would like to know how well the paint matches. Please let us know when you get it sprayed on and don't loose the formula. What type of paint did you buy from PPG?

Denny, Its not the same as the Indigo Blue, Thats what I had on my 79F.
81SH black/blue is black with blue metalflake in it.

Bill, Its PPG Delstar DAR. Acrylic Enamel.
                  More in about 4-5 weeks.
