  • Butterfly Shaft Seals

I did a search, but didn't find my answer. Are the butterfly shaft seals anything special, or can I just use vitron O-rings? If they are different, does anyone know of a good source for them?

I made the mistake of buying someone's fully disassembled, basket case carbs off ebay. Now they need major cleaning, full rebuild, and replacement of nearly every screw. Someone has obviously never heard of heat and penetrating oil

On the plus side I have more info for the rubber plug anomaly. Unless the floats have been replaced, this 80's set has PLASTIC floats and the drilled passage from the main to pilot that requires the rubber plug. Man, 1980 must have been a crazy year for Yamaha and Mikuni

Not sure if they are special or not but...

    I went to NAPA...
I forget the size... they were green o-rings
    2 seasons...no problems...YET!
I recall that they were not as thick as the recess is, but still no issues as of yet

Now, I also recall seeing some available on one of the sites rec'd here....was it MikesXS???????????

I looked on mikes and only saw ones for the BS38's. Don't know if those are the same. If they are, they are actually cheaper at the dealer.

          Hey Jessie,

Remember, in a recent thread we also talked about how along with the main/pilot jet tower tunnel, that the MAIN NOZZLE/NEEDLE JET needed to have that hole in the end of it to allow the fuel to flow from the Main tower to the Pilot tower, and IF it doesn't have that hole, then you DON'T want to plug the pilot jet tower, cause it can't get any fuel thru the tunnel IF that Main Nozzle hole isn't there!

Steve, thanks for that link, I thought that seal was a bit fancier than just a simple O-ring. I have not had to replace any YET, so I can't speak for experience, but I would think that the open end of the "V" would be towards the outside of the carb body, so that with the negative pressure of the inside of the carbs, that the seal would be sucked WIDER to increase it's sealing affect.

            Hey....ummmm ??????????

TC, you sure do have a way with words......but, WHAT?
maybe I need to study up on my carb book, but I have no idea which hole you're talking about.....

Do you by chance have a picture, much easier to translate

I am kinda suprised that with your vast and profound knowledge of this particular marvel of two wheeled wonders that you have never needed to replace the butterfly seals,

Sorry, I got carried away, how's about that pic

Hey, I just clicked on that link.
Now I need to clean my screen, I saw the price tag on those seals,
and choked on the coffee I'd been drinking........
              them thar' things are SALTY

The o-rings were only a couple of bucks......all 4 carbs, too!

On a side thought....has anyone thought of chroming the carb bodies?????

They can had from bikebandit and the dealer for around $2.30-2.50. I don't know why mikes and the other site are SO much more.

I was just over at bike bandit setting up an order for parts for my bikes and according to their parts fiche and list those seals are still available at just over 5 bucks a piece.

Unless they are different for the 70's vs. 80's carbs, they list for $2.38 on the '81SH. This is the same schematic as bikebandit just from a different site (bike bandit has the WORST quality images I have seen yet). I believe we are talking about #38.

Well for some reason it doesn't come up as an image

Interesting... Checking on the '79, different part number and a price of $5.09. #37 in this pic ($4.73 from xtremepewersports).

                          Mystery Seal solved!

Thru some research I have figured out why price fluctuations!

There are two different seals, one for the early model 78-79 carbs, and 1 for the 80-81 series!

Info from Bike Bandit, and then Official Fiche site!
                          81H 38: SEAL
                          (UR #1,4) 17871-001 $2.55
                          OEM# 256-14997-00-00 seal

                          79F 37: SEAL
                          (USA) 20737-001 $5.09
                          OEM# 2A2-14997-00-00 seal

Zanottimotor quotes $3.29 ea for the Earlier Model seal!
The later model seal is even cheaper!! :$1.65 ea!!!!

So...shop around and be sure of what you are getting and needing! Although I think I've heard some folks report having been able to use the MikesXS seal which is for the later model carbs on some earlier model carbs without problems!? FEEDBACK?
