  • Leak from rear axle...

I have oil dripping out of the bottom of the part where the drive shaft connects to the rear axle. Never noticed this until today. Anything I can do?

Do you mean where the swing arm on the shaft side meets the final drive unit? If so what color is the oil?

        Hey Darrek,

Do you mean hear where the 4 bolt/studs are on the FINAL DRIVE(rear axle drive assembly)? This is a 750, but same thing!

Could be a damaged seal in the final drive assembly? BUT, I would also be ready to check the MIDDLE DRIVE, and the rubber boot covering the U-joint. I know the boot is supposed to have hole at the bottom to allow oil/water to drain out, but can get clogged, and then IF the middle gear seal goes, it can leak out the back, and possibly down the hollow driveshaft swingarm and finally out that junction.....but most likely not!?

However, it's leaking at the actual BOTTOM of the Final Drive, could be the drain plug, but also the large O-ring that seals the wheel hub.

Its leaking from the bolt that goes in the hole with the arrow pointing to it.

so youre saying to drain the old oil by taking out that bolt, wrap the bolt in that teflon tape and reinstall and then reoil it?

yes if in fact the leak is coming from that bolt only you can tell, if not then you have trace the source of the leak but this seems plauseable.

if this is the case, the bolt has to come out for repairs anyways you might as well change the gear oil, drain it,

                    stop and read this

                    but first!!!

be able to remove the fill plug, if not take a ride to heat up the rear dirve this will expand the housing a tad from the frozen fill bolt, uxe a right sized allen head and remove the bolt, you must do this first, cause if you can't take out the fill plug, you are up crapcreek, if you drain the oil first, get it??

i don't know when you got the bike but, while you are back there take the rear drive off inspect and grease the spline s to the wheel hub and the splines to the drive shaft, this is mandatory work. but do the oil change first,

remember the top cap is NOT the fill plug so don't go wrenching that off that is the vent cap

the fill plug is the centre most right plug capped with a plastic insert, remove the insert.

with the drive off make sure you are right side up on the drive otherwise you will leak oil fromt the vent hole.

it's up to you , if you are obsessive compulsive like me then it's a no brainer, if you could care less then that's a no brainer, or you could be somebody in between. if you need to ride then ...hello...

heck the winter, i wouldn't know anything about that, never been there or done it, is a good time to do all the work and then some right or wrong?

                              Hi Firecracker,
the fill plugs on the axle housing and on the middle gear housing jam in there for a pastime. The axle plug at least can be removed more easily if you unbolt the unit to grease the spline. (Note that the grease nipple on the outside cannot possibly put the grease where it needs to be.) Then you can get at it to bear straight down on the Allen-socket so it won't cam out rather than turn. I fixed both of mine by brazing a hex nut on top of the bastards so they'll undo with a wrench.
