80 XS1100LG - and sidecar

I am putting a sidecar on my ride and need some more info PLEASE
1- I have read that I can use a leading link type front fork and then I have read about Standard triple trees on a Special doing the same thing. What about the LG? What am I missing

Hey there SHChuck,

The LG is the same as the Specials, just darker! So..the Standard TT on your LG would work the same as for a regular special. Hopefully Fredintoon will chime in.

Doing a search for SIDECAR should reveal many threads.

Mix 'N Match is probably your least expensive route.and might yield a good steering unit tho' I've not tried it.

I have the Steerite mod on my rig and it works great.

Leading links will probably cost three times the Steerite.

I believe that the easier steering will lead to more head shake so more attention will need to be paid to setup and alignment.

80 XS1100LG - sidecar

I am putting on a MV Formula II non flip at this time. I think I will try to make it a flip up some day I think the wife would like that I need to clean up the tub and do some body repairs then repaint. Have been thinking about having someone mount the hack to the XS as I can not do much work here where I live now. I am in Costa Mesa CA

Hi Shchuck,
will this be your first sidecar? Remember it ain't a bike no more, it only looks like one.
If you have ever operated a quad or a snowmobile it steers like a lopsided one of those. Find a big empty car park and ride in ever decreasing circles until you can controllably lift the sidecar and put it down again.
OK then, yes, Standard 'trees on your forward-axle fork legs will reduce the trail to ease the steering. So will letting the fork legs up through the 'trees though not by very much. Wider bars will help too. And if you have those dopey pullback bars, so will straighter ones. Reefing the head bearings way tighter than for solo use will reduce headshake, as will fitting a steering damper. I fitted a WER rotary hydraulic damper to my rig but only because Dennis Kirk was selling them off at a 75% reduction, those things are expensive!
