exhaust systems
Blaise,
Mines got a Motad 4:1 on it which is years old now - black chrome job. Not sure is Motad do this finish now, maybe just the shiny chrome variety.
The black chrome system I have is really high temperature spray paint finish now, although that looks OK. System works fine with no carb tuning and you can access the oil filter without having to drop the exhaust (beware other makes).
My bikes not a midnight special, but a 1.1 sport - which was a European version brought out about the same time. Sort of a low drag style rather than custom cruiser. (see Picture area and you'll see what I mean).
Over here in the Uk M&P in swansea are about the best mail order for this sort of thing still. If you want they're details let me know, I've got a catologue here somewhere.
Not sure how payment would go from Dublin, but if you have trouble let me know and I'll see how I can help this side of the Irish Sea

Marshalls n stuff
Not sure whether for the XS11 the Marshall Deeptone system is designed to avoid the oil filter.
I DO have a Deeptone on my Z1000 tho' - (soon to be replaced by a Vance & Hines straight through system which looks like I'll need to hand out the ear-plugs to neighbours).
The Marshall on the Zed covers the filter housing and I have to drop the whole system every time I want to change the oil filter. I have to admit that I neglected it last time around as I was in a hurry to get off to a rally.
M&P in Swansea do Marshalls and Motads for XS11's. The Ad. in their catalogue actually mentions the lack of oil filter access for Z900 / Z1000 / Z1100 - so maybe the XS1100 system is OK.
M&P are at wwwMandP.com Call (+44 for UK) (0)8705 703030.
Straightline Racing in Kings Lynn have advertised US systems like Supertrapp before now - could be worth a call to suss out any alternatives. (+44) (0) 1533 811855XS1.1 sport - Sold June 2005 :-(

Uk 1.1
I have ordered the Marshall Deeptone 4 into 1 for a supplier in the UK. I am however getting it through a Company in Dublin called BIKEWORLD. The cost is very reasonable and is less expensive than if I ordered it direct. Very suprising but I am not complaining.
Will let you know how it performs.
regards
Blaise.

new exhaust
Hi gentlepersons,
just an update on the Marshall deeptone 4 into 1 exhaust. Finally got round to fitting it on Saturday. When it was delivered I was impressed with the quality of the finish on everthing except the holding flanges. I had new ones made up in a machine shop. The whole exhaust system bolted on perfectly with one minor problem. The rear bracket was about 15mm to short. A little work to alieviate and the problem was no more. This exhaust system avoids the oil filter perfectly. Oil changes will be a snap. The sound is a deep low growl which I like. All said and done I am happy with the result. Money well spent. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
Now to redo all the brake hoses.
regards
Blaise

Cheers for the update blaise,
Yeah the Marshall systems do seem to sound pretty good on most old fours. Not tried one on the XS as the Motad system has lasted and lasted, with the occasional assistance of high temp spray paint.
As Chopper said earlier - the Motad exhausts are a bit sedate, although probably nothing a session with a long drill couldn't cure!
Got steel braided hoses on my XS - and they do help. If the bikes showing it's age maybe worth getting a master cylinder seal rebuild kit too. I picked one up from the infamous M&P in Swansea a couple of months ago for not a lot - cunning plan to install after the fork rebuild.... which seems to have come to a dead stop in recent weeks!
Good luck - GrahamXS1.1 sport - Sold June 2005 :-(

Procamper,
There are two supplier's in the uk that I know of. There is a supplier in Holland ( I do not know the exact details). I ordered mine through a reputable bike shop in Dublin who then sourced the exhaust system. I went this route as the risk was minimal.
I will let you know if I locate a supplier in the U.s.
Happy hunting.
