  • Cam sprocket bolts AWOL

After my bike quit suddenly, it seemed probable to suspect ignition failure. Checked it all out. Everything is good. Cranked it. It wanted to fire but couldn't, and now and then acted like it was stuck. Pulled the head cover and found no bolts in the exhaust cam sprocket. Now what?

    Now what?

See my last reply in your other post. Sounds like you have some valve/piston contact.

Good chance. If so it probably happened in those last few revs as the engine died. In this case those words may have more finality than usual. It's been a rough week.

Fortunatley was only turning mine by hand when the chain slipped, but still ended up taking the head to a friendly machine shop where he re-seated all the valves not just the bent one and cleaned the whole thing up for a few beers.
Hope you know someone like that? Oh and taking the whole oil pan off is a good wya of finding those bolts - that's the voice of personal experience.

          Good luck

Hey Dave.... more bad news. The 80's heads with the bigger valves take up more room in the head space. There isn't room for both valves to be open at once . So any of the exhaust valves that were open may have also contacted intake valves when they cycled around. . It sounds like those bolts didn't get torqued. You'll find them down in the oil pan I'm sure.

You were done riding for the winter anyway... right? lol.

Sorry to hear about this. You had said Kong was running great too.

I appreciate the sympathy, guys. The exhaust cam is sitting with the lobe just touching the front edge of the #4 valve. It is not pressed down. It's possible that if the last bolt came off just as the lobe arrived, all is well. When new bolts arrive from BikeBandit I'll know.
Tod, I wasn't done riding for the winter--yet. We have had 12 days of perfect riding weather, cool but dry. Fall colors are gorgeous, it would have been a great time to be putting around.

Dont worry about the bolts. They were both at the top of the cam chain galley.
