  • Help me identify this exhaust

Well I've finally joined the litrebike club and picked up a '79 XS11SF for $400. 23k miles and it's in decent shape; I was even able to ride it home.

Anyway, it came sans airbox and with UNI pods which were nasty and falling apart. I replaced with K&Ns I had on hand and now it's in dire need of jetting.

So for reasons of getting some ballpark jet numbers (and out of curiosity) I'm trying to figure out what exhaust I've got. Fit and condition are great, and it has an OEM look, but a few things make me thing it's not:

    1) Louder than I'd expect for a stock system. Everyone who hears it run has noted the volume. It's a pleasing deep snarl, IMHO, but definitely on the loud side. Can't really have a conversation without shouting while it's warming up.
    2) Flat, not finned, metal flanges holding it to the head.
    3) No crossover pipe. Not removed and capped off or anything like that, this system just doesn't have a crossover.
    4) All the pictures I see of Specials have megaphone-style mufflers, and these are skinnier with tapered ends.
    5) Condition is better than I'd expect for the original almost 30-year old exhaust.
    6) Mufflers appear to be clamped, not welded, at the collectors.

I couldn't find any markings on the cans. Here's some pictures, including some closeups of a baffle. Never mind the gas slick from leaking left petcock...

Also, those baffles look pretty free-flowing. If this *is* a stock system, have the baffles been modified?

        It's a MAC 4-into-2 taper tip.

          Hey thanks guys!

What's the flow supposed to be like on these? By the noise level, I'm guessing slightly more than stock.

By the way I also noticed the first header bends turned blue real quick after the K&N filters so I figured they must be single-wall pipes...

New jets are in the mail.

Well thankfully I'm not too worried about the blueing. This is going to be my ratbike and I've promised myself not to obsess about cosmetics! I bought this bike to RIDE.

(Disclaimer: Obviously correcting the lean condition is important, and I'm on it.)

that's another benefit of owning an oldie like this, we rationalize that fact that it should be dead, let alone running and making treks across state lines, and the occasinal mishap or door dings don't hurt as much, but i'm sure some here will argue about that.
and lose sleep just the same...

Yep. If I wanna look pretty I can hop on the GS. If I wanna go fast, I'll hop on the XS. Not that the XS looks that bad (would certainly look better with a bath!), but I'm not gonna sweat the details.
