  • WOOT!!!! ... maybe ....

History... I just bought an 81 xs1100 bagger for 300 bucks, the guy said it would crank but had no battery. .... skip to now

I just put in a new battery and tried it ....

    The Good
It took some doing but I got her cranked and running.
    It idols(sp?) but roughly
    It revs smooth

    The Bad
It smokes some on the right side (as your sitting on it)
Oil pours(yes pours) out of the air box when its running
I cant find neutral and the rear wheel spins while its running... even with the clutch in.

I am no mechanic, i'm a software engineer. From searching on this forum it seem as though the oil from the air box thing could be a valve seal, but i'm unsure of any other issues that can cause it.

    At least it runs!

Congrats on the score. A little rear wheel spin is normal. Check and make sure the oil level isn't too high by looking in the site window below the fill hole. Does the oil smell like gas? If so, that would explain a high oil level. If the floats valves in the carb bowls aren't sealing and the petcocks aren't stopping the fuel at the tank, fuel will leak into the cylinders and down past the rings. If this is the case, stop running the bike immediately and change the oil. You will also need to fix petcock and float valve problem.

Idle- If it has been sitting, you will need to clean the carbs. Maybe a good idea even if it hasn't been sitting. Might try synching the carbs first, though, to see if it helps with the rough idle.

Smoke- Where at on the right side is it smoking from?

Neutral- (between first and second ) The fact that you can't find it, combined with what I am guessing is a lot of rear wheel spin, make me think that the clutch is out of adjustment. You may need to tighten the clutch. Clutch adjustment can be found HERE in the tech tips section.

Thanks a million for the info..... I cant stand being clueless when it comes to talking to a mechanic about a problem and what I need/might need done.

Don't bother with a mech, with the help around here, even a software engineer can DIY

You'd be well served to try the DIY method first. Going to the wrong mechanic could turn a good deal into a money pit with a quickness. Once you dig into these bikes you'll find them pretty easy to work on and most issues can be solved with relatively little pain.

The clutch is probably NOT working. If the bike sat for over a year, the plates will "weld" together, and it's HARD to break them loose. There are threads on this, so do a search on "stuck clutch" and you should be able to find some answers. The "oil" out of the air box is probably gas, unless you have a bad cylinder or an "overfill" of oil. DO check the oil level. If you cannot see any oil, DRAIN IT, and start again. Without changing the filter, you should add 3.5 quarts of oil to the bike, NO MORE. As 81 said, go through the carbs FIRST, as a sitting bike WILL have carb problems. Read and print the tech tips, found on the main page. They will show you how to remove, clean, and reinstall the carbs with the least amount of problems.
If you add you location to your signiture, you may fine someone close by to help with the learning proccess.

              Hi Ozmodius

If the bike runs and idles, it may be possible to sucessfully "chemically" Clean the carbs....... I would guess that over half of the carb problems these bikes have are down to amateur rebuilds.........

Try a search for "Seafoam" and prepare to spend a while reading!

My clutch sticks each winter, 'cos my knees are no longer up to all-year riding.

              Enjoy the process!

Crankcase is grossly overfilled, either by someone who didn't know how to check the level with the sight glass on the right side (with bike upright), or by petcocks and float valves malfunctioning and flooding gas through the carbs into the crankcase.

Drain it back to where it is supposed to be, and check what comes out. If is only oil, you're okay. If it contains gas, disconnect the fuel lines. Drain the rest of the oil/gas from the crankcase and refill with fresh oil. Fix the petcocks and float valves before connecting the fuel lines.
