  • Initial valve adjustment

    Is there a trick or method to shimming the valves from scratch? I was going to just put the head on a bench and adjust one side at a time. I remember TC's trouble with trying to occupy the same space with 2 valves at a time, so I was just going to torque each cam down one at a time with some random shims and go from there when I get this head back??

    Should have no problem doing only one cam at a time.. T.C.'s misstep was having both cams in and then rotating one, who's valves hit the valves held open by the other cam.
    I can't recall just how far the valves extend into/or past the dome area.... you may want to have the head propped up offa the bench a little so the valves don't strike the bench.

      I had planned on doing that. I was just hoping there was something more precise than a stab in the dark on the shim sizes needed. Thanks though.

        My only advise would be to start with all fairly thin shims. If they are too thick and work out to have 0mm clearance, you dont get any info to tell the right size other than that the one in there is too big. I have a bunch of 245, 250, and 255's if you want to borrow them and can afford to wait.

          it's not really a stab in the dark. You put any old shims in, torque down the cam and use your feeler guages.

          The chart will tell you what you need, regardless of where you start.

                heh, never hurts, but I assume you only have the set that came out in the first place, like most of us.

                I now have 2 sets, but I didn't when I was setting my valves the first time.

                  Good thinking.

                  As for shims... between the several that I have bought and three motors, I have a decent selection. Thank you for the offer though. I think the way he's doing these valves, they are going to sit considerably deeper anyway and be a thin shim.
