Thanks for that. I'm not an extreme rider either. I just want to know that I can count on my tires to handle emergency swerving and braking without going out from under me.

And, of course, unexpected wet or snowy roads.

      Radials vs bias ply

I have a question going way back to Topcat's response. If you change both tires does it matter if they are bias ply or radials? I remember from my youth being taught that as long as they were the same it did not matter. The difference was in how the tires acted during a turn. I should note that this was in regard to cages not bikes, and possibly not relevent.

Dave, There is a difference in the wheel rim construction between the older bikes like ours and the modern bikes that come with radial tires. I’ve been told we can’t use them on our machines. IIRC the width of the rim is the driving factor. I think this is why Dunlap builds tires like the E3s in both bias ply and radial variants. Tire size on the 1100 is maxed because of the driveshaft clearance or lack of said so even changing the rims out to something more modern with out say going to a chain drive is a challenge. There are folks that have gone to radials on the 1100 but the tire manufactures do not recommend it. The bias plys E3s work great on mine by the way. Here’s a link to the Dunlop site

          Hey wingnut,

... and "they" said there was no point in discussing tires and oil...

You've brought out some very helpful points and pointed to a very helpful site.

          Your enlightenment is much appreciated.

          best, Leon

Thanks Wingnut! I was just curious, but I'll be sticking with bias ply tires after your explanation. I'd hate to expirience a rim failing while riding down the road.
