Speedo bulbs

Just wondering if anyone has crossed over the 12v 3.4w bulbs in the speedo and tach.

I searched but couldn't find anything on this. THe bulbs in mine are Toshiba and have no standardized part number.

When I went to the Yamaha dealer to buy my bulbs, They were all the same. I was surprised but once removed and compaired they were the same bulbs all the way around.

What I used are GE 1445 These are a G3.5 size bulb that uses 2.7 watts rated at 14.4V.

The original Toshiba bulbs are 3.4 watts, 12V.

I actually don't mind a slightly dimmer dash backlight. I find most dashes too bright when driving at night. This also saves 2.8 watts while running.

I changed both the tach and speedo backlights, to keep them the same brightness, and this gives me two spare 3.4w bulbs in case any of the other bulbs burn out. There are 10 in all in the dash

Hey there folks,

I wanted to post a followup to my repair of my tach! With all of this talk about LEDs, I decided to get some to replace the small bulbs in my gauge, the main illumination, the neutral, highbeam, fuel, as well as the license plate lights. Each one draws 4.5 watts, there are a total of 4 main bulbs in the gauge housings, and 2 in the license plate light....for models with one! That's 27 watts, 2.25amps, every little bit helps!

These bulbs are from Superbright LEDS. The ones for the neutral, highbeam, and fuel light are single wide viewing angle models. The ones for the main illumination bulbs in the gauges as well as the license plate are 5 leds in one, positioned in a radial pattern to better shine to the side, along with 1 on the end! MY gauge lights are GREEN, but they make this same bulb pattern in white which are what I used in the license plate reflector. The combination of the angled bulbs, and the reflector housing caused plenty of light to be shined onto the plate!

The main bulbs sockets are a little smaller than the bulb, but will go into the gauge socket with a modest amount of tilting!


The 5LED bulbs are Non-polarity, can be positioned any way and will lite, the smaller single bulbs ARE Polarized, just jumped a 12V source to them to determine which pole was positive, you can tell which pole in the sockets by the colored wires!


This first picture is a tad blurry, had the lights in the room off, camera set itself on slow shutter speed, didn't bother getting the tripod. Notice that niceGREEN GLOW!

These others were taken with the room lights on, and you can see how bright they look!



Here are the license plate photos.


This last one may also be of interest to Webbcraft, the tail light has the large 56bulb LED Truck Array in it, what's interesting is that the clear inner reflector has a dual circular pattern that makes it look like it has 2 bulbs in it, but the rest of the tail light section is fairly well lit as well!


FOLLOWUP: I had to replace the RED fuel LED back with a Standard bulb, because the LED was so sensitive that it stayed lit all the time, due to a "small" amount of current that always flows thru that circuit, until the fuel gets really low, then it sends enough current to actually LITE the standard bulb!

Ok, now that I have my speedo so I can see it, lets get more into the LED lights!

I would like to change all the incidental lights, ie; park/signal lights, trunk lights, over to LED, to take load off the charging system.

I am not too worried about the lights that are not on all the time, like the signal indicators, oil light, etc. the only one that may be nice to change would be the blue hi-beam indicator, as it can be on for long periods from time to time.

I went to the Superbright LED page, and they have quite an array of 1157 replacement bulbs, 90deg, wide/narrow angle etc.

I assume, for the tail light (std) that 2 wide angle red ones would do the trick?

For the rear signal/park lights should I use 90deg bulbs, or is wide angle sufficient?

It says that the 1156/57 they have is not suitable for being on for long periods, such as lights in a motorhome, wouldn't that be the same as park lights on a bike?

The front signal/park lights, in the Vetter fairing face staight forward so any of the narrow angle ones should work in amber?

Actually, the Dash lights ie. bright and neutral isn't quite as bright as the regular incandescent type! And that's also why I went with GREEN for the background lighting!


Did you happen to check out Superbright's OTHER LED section?! They have this specially designed 1157/1156 style bulb that allows you to plug the bulb in, and then position the LED array anyway you want, and would cover a larger/wider area than the bulbs mounted on the bases without worry about getting the leds in the right position with the one piece bulbs.

I didn't use the one piece bulbs in my tail lights, but took their 56 bulb array and mounted it inside the rear housing.

Later I took their NEWER BRIGHTER 56 bulb truck array and mounted them on the back of my luggage rack box....and they are MUCH BRIGHTER than the one in my OEM reflector....just ask anybody at the Suches rally! And this was only 56 LEDs, with two of the ones above you would have 72 LEDS in the TAILLIGHT!

I would think the above separate bulb/socket array would also be better than their big bulbs, they only have 24 or 30 LEDs, the separate arrays have 36 leds per bulb. Also the sockets were at an angle on my 81SH dual bulb taillight assembly, and so they wouldn't be easy to position for best illumination/view.

Just so you know, I WAS running the 1157 bulb. I found they QUIT WORKING after only six months. The truck LED light I have in my box have been working great for over a year. I don't think the bulbs take the vibration of daily riding well. JMHO

Well, near as I can see, the BA9s style are the ones for the dash and indicator lights.

I assume you could use either wide or narrow, depending on how much of the lens you like to light up. I would think wide for the back lights, and, narrow for the round lights on specials, or wide angle for the large rectangular lenses on the standards

The 30LED wide angle amber 1157 should work well in the front fairing signal/park lights, while the 90deg ones for the rear signals.

Just not sure if 2 wide angle red would work well enough in the tail light on the std as it has 2 bulbs that point out at an angle to the sides?
