  • New Coils?

    I have a 81 XS1100sh
I am running 120 mains and pod filters, that has been modified for good air flow. I have adjusted the piots and I am still runing rich. I have rejetted down to 115 and the plugs look the same. They are very black. I run out of power on the upper end, around 6500. I know this bike should have much more power. Could it be the coils? I have tested them and they are about 1 ohm lower than the lowest recomedation. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

      Hey Pastaman,

See the bold text above, that may be part of your problem depending on what kind of pods you installed! The EMGO inexpensive kind have a prominent lip on the mounting surface that can interfere with the air flow and cause it to run rich.

But, more info please! Have you done a carb kit, new pilot jets?? There are some kits that use the wrong type, and that can also cause rich problems in the lower rpms!

Take the pods off and do a test run, you should be able to get it above 6500 rpm then! Also what are you floats set to? The 115 jets should be fine with Pod filters.

Now, for the coils, are you talking the primary windings? They should be about 2.5 ohms for an 81, but a PO might have put in the earlier 1.5 style from another bike, and they could get damaged since the 81 doesn't use a ballast resistor! So...yes, the coils might also be bad, or getting burned up due to too much voltage IF they ARE the 1.5 ohm style....should have 2H7-xxx on them for the 1.5ohm, vs. 4H7 for the 2.5 ohm 81 style!

I modified my pods acording to your method. I will check the numbers on my coils. I am also running stock pilots. What size should I get? Also what would you recomend for an after market coil? Thanks for your help, I really appreiate it

You might find This Tech Tip in the MODs/Electrical section helpful!

But...you didn't answer the other questions about what have you done to the carbs, float height? The OEM pilots are plenty big enough....I'm running them with my Indy filters and 4-1 pipes.

However, if your floats are set too low, it will cause them to run very rich also....just about no matter what jet you have!

Okay, the velocity stack mod should work okay for you, so it's more about ensuring the carbs are clean, the main jet NOZZLE/emulsion tube...was it removed and cleaned?

Sorry, just can't remember all details across other threads, so that's why requested a reminder of work history of carbs/bike!

HI, Thanks. My carbs have been torn down and cleaned. I think I am going to try the new coils. Thanks for the advice on getting the cheaper XS650 coils. I do really appreiate your help. Thanks again......Jim
