  • oil leak at timing cover

While placing a restrictor in the vac advance line, I discovered about a half a tablespoon of oil in the timing cover. Looks like it may be the front crankshaft seal leaking .... is this servicable without splitting the cases?

Do a search in this site. I think there have been some write-ups on it.

If it's the crank seal the replacement seals do not have the "lip" on them so it can be replaced without splitting the cases. If may also be the main oil gallery seal that is behind the plug at the bottom under that cover. There's an "O" ring there on the plug that may be not sealing properly.

        thx Skids and Rob ...

By looking at the pics in the manual, it sure looked like the seal lip was on the inside of the case , (gulp) .... glad to know a replacement is available with no lip .... found Portero's thread on replacement too ... thx

An additional unrelated question and maybe this should be another thread altogether: I once read a thread where Skids was saying that is was possible to retro-fit earlier year carbs onto a later model. Do either of you, Skids or Rob or anyone else, think I could get a set of 79 carbs (I have a pretty good spare set) to work properly on my 80G? (other engine mods are K&N insert and Super Trapp) I'm nearing my wit's end trying to get the VM33 smooth bores to work properly at idle and 'off idle' .... pretty damn scarry at stop ights !! ..... even the Dyno Jet shops are saying the VM's will never work right on the street and this seems to be the consensus here on this site too .... no one has had anything good at all to say about these carbs ... I believe that ,Rob, you even told me once that they were good mostly at WOT .... the bike runs awesome once the rpms come up ...

The early carbs will work just fine on the later motor. Remember that the early jets are BIGGER than the later models, because they move fuel for both the pilot and mains. You actually have more adjustments with the early carbs.

There's no doubt about it the smooth bores are designed for HIGH PERFORMANCE and more often then not high performance gains are often at the cost of drivability in the other ranges including idle. Many modified engines idle very roughly because they are no longer setup and or tuned to stand still for long :-) You should however be able to find a happy medium even with these carbs. It's just going to take more messing around with the jetting and settings. If your running them on pods perhaps you need some sort of air box. Pods on to themselves can wreak havoc on tuning so it would likely be more so with the smooth bores.

Re: thx Skids and Rob ...

I don't know about the jetting to accomadate a supertrap header, but yes, older carbs will work on an 80 model. Just remember to drill the nipples on the airbox so that you can hook up the breather hoses. The later model boxes were filled because later carbs have an extra hole at the inlet bell to serve the function. I suspect you will want to increase the mains two sizes from 137.5's to 142.5's. The pilots should be fine.

                something to think about ....

I truely appreciate the input from all three of you .... it is a dilemma and I had all but decided to forge on with the smoothe bores and, it's true, there might be more stuff I could do ... slides, needles, more or less exh baffles yada yada .... changing back to BS 34s is a PITA too, but nonetheless doable, and thanks for letting me know it could be done, men ... PLUS ... I almost forgot .... there's always my secret weapon .........that'd be Mr' Planedick, himself, the one and the only .... the man is definately awesome .... sickly gifted engineer, XS11 wrench/guru and tinkerer extrordinaire ...... now, Planedick, he has the eagle 'eye' ... and the hands. I'd ride it up there for him to look over, that is if I were sure it wouldn't stall out on the freeway along the way and strand me .... I'm gettin' too old for that S$%t. I agree with Rob too ... there should be a happy median somewhere with these VM33s .... logically, I think ??

I finished my last post late last night after a long day at work and promply fell asleep while sitting up on my sofa, dreaming about my bikes, particularly the beautiful, but troublesome G .... little did I know that today it would be like Xmas in October here at my batchelor pad in the boonies.

Even before I awoke this morning my phone was ringing .... who? .... noneother than .... yup,if you hadn't already guessed ... Planedick, himself. By 10:30 he was puttin' into my yard on the PATHFINDER ... in his tail trunk his famous mercury manometer.

After a cup of coffee or two and some man-BS, we hooked that carb stick up to the motor and fired the thing .... I had already pulled the tank and spun it backwards, pumbing up the fuel lines for bidness .... the rest was a blurr ... a short 15 or 20 minutes later Planedick had that damn G purrin' like a kitten at idle and growlin' like a tiger when the throttle was snapped open .... Whooooa !!. Pretty soon after that we were ridin' up in the mountains .... was great fun .... best the bike has probably ever run in this configuration .... I put about 60 miles on it altogether today, lots of stop and go .... it's not quite as well behaved as my stockers are, but easily liveable, Rob .... although I did not push the envelope too hard today in either the handling or rpm categories, the bike seems like it has lots of top end. Lots.

Bottom line is: Planedick, you did it .... again ..... an awesome XS man are you ..... the force is definately with him, folks .... thx again Dick ... you rock !!
