Good luck. They're rare. They haven't made them in a long time, so what you do find is going to be something someone has had sitting on their shelf for a very long time.

Some do buy the oversized ones and with a small file, shave them to the right length. Even if you find them, you'll probably be better off sticking a few hundred more with it and getting an 1179 kit from Wiseco and boring it. Re-ringing tired cylinders and pistons is only a scab... I know this personally very well. Just my 2 cents...

You would have better luck finding hen's teeth. You may be able to use the first size over size and then file the end gaps down to the proper spec, but OEM rings are no longer available.

Tod, give him a break, it IS his Bday, after all.
As for the rings, IF you can find the one over rings, then use them, after setting the end gap with a file. They work just as well, and should be easier to find. You can even go as far as the fourth over rings, but they take longer to file.

I jumped on a set (4) of one over rings a year or so ago, just in case one of my stock motors needed re-ringing.

Now try and find a set of rings for RC Engineering overbore pistons!

Couldn't you do a little research to determine if the rings from a different make/model would fit? I mean a ring is a ring, and as long as it fits the diameter of the piston and cylinder, and the thickness of the ring will fit into the ring land. Possibly those from an FJR, or some big Suzuki would work. I don't know if the rings from a water cooled bike would be the same alloy or not, but I'll bet if you were to contact Dan Hodges, and run it by him, he would probably have an answer for you.

                      Bikebandit shows them.

The ring sets are not shown as discontinued so I wonder if you can still order them?

Base part number for 79 from yamaha is 3J2-11610-00-00

                        $54!!!!

Holy Sheep Dip!! I thought Wiesco was a rip off at $25 a set (x4) for the 1179 cc kit.

This is what I have to do for the RC pistons. Measure them up and try and match with something close, then do a little filing.

I assume if one couldn't find just the right size it, would be possible to machine the ring lands on the pistons a little too.

                            Hen's Teeth

I just happen to have a set of hen's teeth, er, standard rings, that I may be convinced to part with. I can be reached at dwales@gotmc.net.
