We just did my carbs here last week, and all I did was push the clear tube into the drain hole.

It leaked a small amount, but just held it over a bucket.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Here's another option. You can find zerk fittings with the same thread as the drain plugs. Simply drill out the ball and spring and you have the perfect place to put your plastic tube. Works especially well if you can find the 90 degree fittings. I think I found mine at Lowes or Home Depot.

      Good luck!

If the carbs are off the bike, there's a way to check how precise the fuel levels are, rig the carbs in a padded vice, pour fuel down the fuel hoses, the float valves will close when the floats rise, carefully remove each bowl from underneath without spilling a drop, there's your 'real' fuel level

          Hi pggg,

Sounds good, but what happens to he fuel above the closed valve when you take the bowl off? Surely any fuel in the line and the passages in the carb body will dump into the first bowl of a pair which you remove? The 2nd bowl of a pair will only get the portion of fuel which is above its valve but within the carb body......

Or is there way of holding the float up in place and the valve closed as you take the bowl off?

What we need to do is make up a set of plexiglass float bowls with a one way valve holding a rod able to bend the floats without pulling the bowls??????????????????????

              Hi egsols,

I think I remember seeing clear bowls in an elderly "Chopper Bits" catalogue......... Available in red or blue translucent, or clear!..... I thought of 'em as a novelty item, but they might have a use!

Or did I imagine it all?

Tip petrol down the upright fuel lines till they fill over, lower the hose, drain out what's left in the hose, bowls are filled

Lots of fuel filters are clear, remember the old glass filters on tractors?

Just found this, gotta check it out...

BTW the big plug in the bottom of the bowl is to allow you to change your main jet without pulling the bowl !!!!!!!!!!

                    Wow.

That is awesome. I would have never thought of that. I kinda wish I had the old style bowls, now.

That is most curious...I just went out into the garage and tried to fit a main jet through the drain hole in a bowl, and it would not fit. It was very close, but you would have to drill out the threads and go to the next larger size thread to pull this off. It sounds like a good idea, and might be real handy if you are trying to fine tune the carbs. I don't see why it couldn't be done, though.

                          Yeah John,

Wouldn't it be nice to have that kind off set up for our rides!

In the blurb they were talking about fine tuning the carbs in the pits so I would imagine they evolved from racing.

I have seen some Mikuni jets that have a much smaller head diameter than our carbs, so it may be possible to change thm through the drain hole. It would be nice to be able to re-jet without having to pull the carbs every time.

Well, the 'jet change hole' might work for the Ducati twins, you wouldn't do it on the eleven, no room down there, quicker and easier to whip the carbs off..

I was thinking that myself. When the engine is warm, it is bad enough trying to get in there to adjust the idle speed. I can't imagine, even on a cool motor, trying to get a jet out and another one up in its place with the carbs still installed.
