  • Back Rest

I'm looking for a back rest that could mount on the stock grab rails on a 79SF. Right know I have a backrest with luggage rack and it's great for my kid but I would like to get rid of the luggage rack but still keep a back rest for him and/or me.

Does any know of any such critter than can be mounted on the stock grab rails or maybe modded to fit?

    Hi Ernie,
Dennis Kirk just posted they have several styles of backrests at (they claim) a wondrous bargain price this week only.
You could take a looksee there?
But how can you go anywhere without a luggage rack? **** not only happens, it has to travel.

      Effin' bowdlerizing routine.

Mealy-mouthed censor program asterisks out real English words now?
I'll try again Ernie, SH*T happens!
Lucky the ignorant program setter can only spell in American so I can call him an arsehole.

        Hi Fred,

I prefer the bike naked at this point so I have devised a helmet mounted luggage rack. (just kidding) I've got an old set of Shoei hard bags I'm thinking of putting back on. The luggage rack has it's benefits but not for any type of secure storage. I mean if I leave **** on there it'll get pinched.

The rack I've got sits fairly high and throws the aesthetics off but I want a back rest so when I wind the throttle Junior has a chance of staying on the bike. It's also nice that he can sit back a bit further so I don't get his helmet in my back under braking.

Where do I go to check out Dennis Kirk's stuff?

          Hi Ernie,
          try this:-
          http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/cm...lse&store=Main
and if this ugly long link don't work just google "dennis kirk metric bike"
I can't find their bargain flyer for backrests from that page but they do have an 800 number listed and every time I've phoned them the young lady has been polite & helpful.

The specials had an available grabrail w/built in backrest, that required a highback seat to go with it.

Fred gave me a set this summer....

It gives the passenger a backrest with that original look.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

"Fred gave me a set this summer...."

                Hi Craz,
and you know I told you why. It was in reasonable shape and the drivers portion of the seat was even comfortable but God that King/Queen/Hiback seat and chrome rail setup looked ugly. If Ernie is concerned about the aesthetics of a luggage rack it seems to me he'd purely hate THAT set-up.

All depends on point of view.

                  Any pics Craz?

Well, Derwat loves it. Looks and all. He also has no carrier rack, and no interest in one, so far as I know.

It's just one of the other options available. One, by the way, that is 'original' rather than some of the mickey mouse ones I've seen over the years.

Right now Derwat has the '80 Special version, that came off my bike on his, even though it doesn't fit right, until he can get the '79 one recovered.

                      Thanks for the pics Craz,

Going back to what Fred said, that's not the look I'm hoping to achieve. Not to offend but it kinda looks like it was rear ended.

You are right, I am looking more for something resembling what is in the last pic.

I would like to find one like that last pic as well for my '80 XS. I looked at the web site listed but all I could find fit mostly Honda and a few Kow's.

No problem. We each have our own ideas about styling.

Myself, I want function first, then I go for looks. I am not sold on the big tall seat style either, but then I wouldn't dream of getting rid of the carrier!

In fact I go many miles out of my way to GET the carrier and all the other related luggage items, right Fred?
