  • Help Needed

    Hi All

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a little wiring problem. About two days ago my head light stopped working. I mean it just went dead, there is no Clock light. or
Tail light it's just dead. i have checked the globes and the fuses and they are all fine.

The Break light still works, I thought it may be the switch that has a bad connection but checked that and nothing!!!! all wires are fine.

Can anyone please give some detailed advice on how to fault find this problem.

    Thanks in advance

There are a couple of relays that you should check, depending on what type of bike yours is.

On the XS there is a small relay under and near the front of the fuel tank, and there is the reserve lighting device under and about middle of the gas tank (standard at least) .
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I saw the reserve lighting device. I sure hope it is not that as they are like hens teeth here in SA. I will grab the tester and give it a bash.

Is there anyway to bypass the device and test to see if the switch and lights are working.

      My Bike is a 81XS 1100H

      Thanks Revilo

You can bypass the reserve device easily, and permanently if you wish, instructions are in the tech tips, mods section.

You can test the relay as well, if I remember correctly,, once the bike is running, check the wire (blue I think) that comes from the relay to the reserve device. It should have 6 or 7 volts coming out, don't quote me on the actual numbers.

On my XS it was the relay that was toast, so I took it's cover off and played with it until it would work, although it buzzed at low rpms.

There is also a light checker unit on the left side beside the battery that the tail light circuit runs through to tell you if the bulb is out. On my Special it is on a rubber mount just to the left of the battery.

Also, don't just visually check glass fuses. Put a multimeter on them and check for continuity. They ofter go out, but look just fine.
