One day I will doubtless need a supply of valve shims and the clever doohickey you put them in with. Where can you find them these days?

Thanks for input "Pat Kelly" and "fredintoon"; that valve adjustment tool is not hard to find. DennisKirk 2007 catalog, page 289, part number 28-271, $14.99 .

I'm still "trying" to get the shims; working by PM to maybe do a swap of shims. The following is a PM/response I sent to one of
the members, so others can "see where I'm at" .........on this................ :

"Yes, I've found them to order commercially ($) on the Web; they're a bit higher than I'd "hoped" they would be, for my budget. I may have to go that route, to feel that I would have
"an assortment" of number thicknesses to get the right clearances on the three intakes that are presently at 0.00 clearance. I would need ~~ two 240's, two 245's, two 250's and two 255's . I think this would accomplish my needed clearance(s).
? Do you have these numbers in multiples of "two"? There's no way I can know the clearance those intakes are staying open (if any), until I slip a thinner shim in, and bolt down the cam. If you can help me, a swap would probably be a ble$$ing to me."

If anybody had told me about this link > http://www.procycle-online.com/hotcams/valve_shims.htm ~~ would have "educated"
me faster, and saved me a lot of emailing to try to find shims, that couldn't be had for less than $10-$14 each on the commercial sites. You can scroll down to the kit on above site to
the "29mm OD" size; 10 different sizes~~20 shims. I'm going to
order this fine selection tomorrow AM; payday's at midnight. I could have gotten the 6 shims I needed for $70 ; for $30 more I'm
          getting 14 more shims/pads.

Old Norton Rider,(wasn't that Trixie's nickname?)

Take yourself, your old shims and a 6-pack of good beer and go to the nearest Yamaha or Kawasaki dealership.
Speak to the service manager or a mechanic and ask if they'll swap these shims fer a smaller size. (make sure they see the beer)
You state that you have zero clearance. As a starting point, ask for shims two sizes smaller.
Each shim is incremented by .002 inch(I hate metric)
As your thinnest feeler guage is probably .001 and doesn't fit...Two sizes thinner will/should get you around .004 clearance. probably closer to .005

I like metric; I think metric in my sleep. Years back, I was a "Whitworth" person. I have nothing against inches/SAE. My goal is to have 3 XS's "under project"~~~someday. With that in mind, one tends to hord pieces and parts; now I'll start on shims.
I feel kinda stupid, that I didn't already have 'em. Admittedly, if the local Yamaha/Kawasaki/Suzuki dealership was more "customer 'co-operative' " at the parts counter, I would do what you're saying. You gotta be buying another motorcycle there, every year or two to get parts counter cooperation. To sum it up, they're sorry. they're rotten.
I've dealt with 'em for 15 years.

Put more stuff on here; I enjoy readin' yer stuff.

I totally understand you desire to hoard parts (and bikes). The reason I had those shims to offer was because when I did my tune-up shims where selling on ebay for a very high price. I watched a dozen for for close to $100. Then while continuing my search, someone who either didn't know or didn't care what he had listed 40+ shims with a buy it now of $80. I pounced and bought the set, told the wife that I would do the tune-up and then sell them all for a large profit. (still gott'em).
