  • Exhaust discoloration

    hello..

Is it normal for the Elevens to have bluish discolored exhaust headers? or is that a sign of a lean mixture?

    thanks,

Bluing is caused by a lean condition. The exhaust temp is too high, cuausing the discoloration. Stock pipes should be double walled, and shouldn't change color.

I thought that lean yellowed the pipes more than blue. I thought blue was rich?? I do remember them saying that if the bluing goes way down the pipe and makes the bend to the collector, it's rich. (Gasses burning in and down the tube) If it mainly stays close to the head and not much past the first bend... lean.

          "LEAN"

          Color sequence is:
          Gold...
          Blue...
          Purple...
          Black....
Oh, and don't forget cherry red... that means quit idling the bike and shut it off!

Actually saw that once on an industrial engine.
Had stopped by a customers and as I walked thru the plant a guy was operating the sweeper. As he passed by I noticed a glow thru the grill on the engine cover. Waved him to stop, popped the hood and where pipe came out the exhaust manafold was a nice brite cherry red. Was on a Continental Y-112 industrial engine. Funny part was that it ran so well, not even a miss.

Actually saw that when I looked at my pipes... stuck in traffic.
Pulled over, shut it down, had a smoke...
Bike wouldn't crank over again till it cooled for about 20 minutes.
              That was 20,000 miles ago.
