Is there anyway to bypass the ballast resistor?

Maybe by using a different set of ignition coils... but Im not sure. You can get another one at any electronics shop... I think it's a 10W 1,5 ohm resistor... not quite sure, would have to look it up. It was alredy discussed here, just use the search option.

The coils actually are 6 volt coils on the 78-80, that is why the ballast resistor is there. When starting it is dropped out to allw the full 12 volts across the coil, then the resistor is allowed back in to cut the voltage for regular running. I would buy a set of 81 coils (can be made to fit) since the 81 did not use the resistor (IIRC) the primary on the 78-80 is 1.5 ohms and on the 81 it is 2.5 ohms. Look through the tips, I wrote all of this up as an addendum to the coil FAQ.
