  • Clunk in Drive

hey guys. second posting on same problem. I send message before looking for advice on primary chain tension and thanks to those that helped. But...still doesn't solve my problem. This '81 XS has a Clunking sound only when engaged in gear, I can rev the hell out of it in neutral...NO Noise...put it in gear and CLUNK CLUNK...and I can't see any thing in the whole engine and trannie that could be giving me the problem....recently got my brother to have a look ....Bombardier and OMC trained mechanic..we are both stumped. any suggestions or anyone who has gone through same. Have the engine apart and can't really test anything like that until reassembled .

    Thanks Teach

    Hi Teach,
you mean it goes CLUNK CLUNK just as it goes into gear and then runs normally?
The XS11 tranny shifts like a Russian tractor, they ALL do that. The effect is less if the idle is set real low.
OTOH if it keeps on CLUNKing as it goes along, you KNOW something is busted, right?
