It just seems weird to me that it would only be the one pipe that isn't fitting right. Makes me wonder what happened that the PO would have taken it off. It also has different bolts at the header too than the other pipes. I fully realized it was leaking exhaust when I replaced the gasket. I have some Muffler Weld the I used on the exhaust tips, is that the same stuff you're talking about? Mine came in a thin silver can about 4 inches round. Reminded me of a can of pomade.

Ok, I thought this was egsols continuing his thread!
I am not sure what joint your are talking about? On mine, I have S&S slip on mufflers that slide onto the collectors. There were no clamps there, and they leaked a little bit. Wouldn't be noticable w/o the fairing, but I was getting exhaust smell while riding down the highway.
I sealed them up with some muffler paste, it comes in a toothpaste type tube, but I've seen it in the round tin like yours as well.
All the paste does is fill in the space, and it hardens with heat. It will seal small cracks, but you have to make sure you heat it up and let it harden before putting too much back pressure on it.
I took off the mufflers, cleaned them and the collectors, smeared about 2" of paste at the end of the collectors, slipped on the mufflers and put a hose clamp on each just to add a little reinforcement. Then I idled it until the exhaust got hot, let it sit, then took it for a ride later that day.
So far it's holding.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

This stuff in the tin said I had to let it sit for 24 hrs to dry before doing anything. My exhaust appears to be stock 4-2 and there's a clamp on the collector but the pipe going from the header to the collector slides in but it won't clamp down far enough for it. That's why I was thinking of taking the clamp off so there's basically two pieces of pipe (one smaller one slid into the larger one) and tape the whole thing together and then clamp the tape. There is very little vibration on those pipes and the space between them is only enough for maybe a peice of sheet metal but it's enough for exhaust to come blowing back out of it. I may take a picture later.79 Special Engine/80 Special Body - sold to bigray03Comment

The muffler cement/paste/putty I use is water based. It's a grey paste. You clean the mating parts, as best you can, to get loose stuff off, then wash it off with water.
Then you spread the paste on the male (smaller) pipe (I put it on both the outside of the small pipe and inside of the large pipe to insure full coverage) then slide them together.
Then you get the exhause hot, at idle, so that your not creating enough back pressure in the system to push the soft putty out. Once it gets hot the paste hardens and seals (hopefully) the leaks. The clamp just reduces the amount of space it has to seal.
With my Monte Carlo, the headers have 3 slip joints. The two on the passenger side were sealed with this stuff 9 years ago and are still sealed. The driver's side has one slip joint and the paste cannot keep it sealed, no matter what, if I give it a full throttle shot. I have dual 3" exhaust with a x-over and even with the exhaust dump tubes open, a full throttle pass will blow the cement out of that one joint. Then, of course, it sounds like I have an exhaust leak.
This cement is not a glue. If you have to take the pipes apart, they will come right apart and you can rub the old, hardened cement off with your fingers or some light sanding.
I haven't run into your problem, where it's leaking in the front of the collectors, but I would have thought the clamps should be able to clamp the pipes snugly. Maybe there is some kind of sleeve or gasket that is missing.
I am sure one (or many) of the gurus here will know...Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Thanks Craz,
I've been too busy lately to even look at the bike, let alone ride or work on it. When I get a chance I'm gonna try the paste.Ernie

Crazcnuk,
I took a closer look and apparently 1&4 pipes are welded into the collector but 2&3 were clamped on. #3 was clamped fine but #2 apparently took a hit somewhere in it's past and the clamp was all skewed back. So, I pulled the clamp off and put some muffler weld on it. Can't really say enough good things about that stuff. Real easy to work with. We'll see if I slathered enough on tomorrow after it's dry.79 Special Engine/80 Special Body - sold to bigray03Comment
