Just wondering about the Jardine 4 into 1 on my 79sf. The collector is not fastened to the header pipes, the pipes just slip into the collector and as such I get a bit of exhaust blown out at the joint. Is this normal or am I missing some type of clamp? The PO installed them after he got them ceramic coated.

I have the same question about my S&S system. The pipes and mufflers mount in all the stock locations, but there were no clamps at the slip-on joints.
I think this is why I get quite a bit of exhaust (smell) collecting behind the fairing on the highway.
It may also be causing some of the extra noise echoing off my fairing?
I was going to go to my local auto parts store and see about some heavy duty pipe clamps, the stainless variety.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

You may be able to take the headers to a muffler shop and they can expand the ends just a little to give a more snug fit in the collector
But is it normal to have this kind of clampless (if that is a word) setup?Ernie

clamplessness
Hi Ernie,
check and see if there's a slot in the outer part of the joint between the components. If there is, yes there should be a clamp there to squeeze the joint together. If the outer is a plain sleeve with no slot, the joint was meant to be clampless. If you ain't happy with that merely putting a clamp on there won't do it. You will have to hacksaw or Dremel Tool a slot in the outer sleeve that will allow the sleeve to be squeezed inwards. A stainless steel worm drive hose clamp will do the job.Fred Hill, S'toon

Jardine 4-1 chrome-plated megaphone system is put together with "interferrance fit" using no clamps between head pipes and collecter...

Hey Fred,
There is no slot in the pipe so as per Skids comment, I take it that's the way they supposed to be. It just doesn't make that geat a seal and at lower speeds and I get to enjoy all those lovely fumes. I'll take a look to see if I can get some sort of clamp to work.
In the meantime, I wouldn't mind going back to the stock config of 4 into 2. Anyone recommend a good set of after market 4 into 2's?Ernie

I have the same issue with my Jardine 4-1 (sort of). No fairing, so I don't notice fumes, but I do have popping coming from the exhaust. I replaced the exhaust gaskets, and what a PITA it was to get everything back together. The popping is still there and I'm assuming that air is mixing with the exhaust and igniting it.
What I was thinking about doing was getting some muffler tape from the auto parts store and just taping it up. It's just a thin metal tape with one side sticky (as many tapes are). Would probably work, but if you were to want it off, it might be a PITA to get off.-Do what makes you happy.

I am going to get stainless, screw type (heavy duty hose clamps about 2" wide) clamps and give that a try.
A decent clamp should still help, even withot the slots. If the pipes are an interference fit to start with, the clamp does not have to put much pressure to seal it.
One could also try using muffler cement between the slip-on joint AND a clamp. There should not be too mcu back pressure at the joint to force the cement out.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Harley sells some really stout pipe clamps, but I doubt that a clamp would do any good at that location. I think, by memory, that the collector has 4 header ports and they are skin to skin...

That's the problem Skids, how do clamp a configuration like that? I don't really want to stick in cement either cause I'd like them easy to pull so I can get my bike lift under.Ernie

Use a bead of Permatex Ultra-Copper sealer around the inside of each tube in the collecter.
I've used it on my bikes which had slight exhaust leaks in the past, and it works well (especially on stainless tubes when the gasses discolor the pipes around the joint).

Muffler cement is not a glue. It won't sieze the parts together.
It hardens into a hard substance, which blocks exhaust gases, but once taken apart it rubs off easily. It is only there to take up space.
On My Monte Carlo, the Hooker headers have 3 joints, and in one full-throttle run I can blow the cement out of one of the joints, the other 2 never leak. Just has to do with how much pressure is at that spot.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I'm going to resurrect this thread because I cant decide what to do with my #2 exhaust having this same problem. There's a clamp there and it's all the way down but still not catching the pipe and I get blowback exhaust when I'm sitting still.
I've got muffler weld but would think some muffler tape might do better if I removed the clamp and just taped the joint shut?79 Special Engine/80 Special Body - sold to bigray03

Since you first posted this, I put muffler cement on both my slip on muffler joints, and a couple of hose clamps. I am getting no blow back from mine now.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
