  • Too part or to repair?

    Well, finally got my '80 XS1100 SG back together again, and went to take it for a ride.

    1st gear wont engage, just rattles, although second gear seems to be OK. Did jump out once.

    Here's my dilemma....... I am starting a new job next week, and I wont really have the time now to continue with the repairs.

    Motor is strong, and I have just rebuilt the carbs, calipers etc.
    The main thing going for it right now, is that it is complete.

    Only 21000 miles.

    Do I part it out, or persevere over winter. Either way, I will need to sell it since I can no longer afford to keep it.

    Any opinions out there?

    Keep it

    It dosen't matter how long it takes you but when you're done you'll look back and thank the starts in heaven that you perservered with it.

      Ummm he said he can't afford to keep it. Do you have any pics of it I mean if it looks real good sell it whole if not maybe part it.

        Why??? It's not like it eats or anything?? Store it and next spring, your money situation may be better. It's not going to take much money at all to fix it from what you described... just time.

        If you're set on getting rid of it... I hate to see bikes parted out that are whole. Just me personally.

          If it's just needing the dremmel fix, that can be done for a few dollars (gasket materiel). What a way to pass the time over the winter, tinkering on the bike.
          When I did the tranny fix I had a job too. Did it a little at a time (can be done in a couple of hours if you don't have wife or kids interrupting).

            If you have to sell it then sell it whole to someone (me) that will put it back on the road.
            I hate signatures. Too many cars and Bikes to list here.

              Hi Ozzie,
              what are you thinking eh? Dumping your bike "as is"with it's fritzed tranny wouldn't bring in enough cash to pay your rent and groceries for a month. Even if you can't find the time to work on it due to starting a new job and all, just stash the bike someplace safe until you can find the time. Any XS11 is like a fine wine, stored properly it will gain in value as it ages.

                Yeah, after sleeping on it, and reading your response, I will do the repairs, I guess I was a little premature

                I've readup on the dremel fix etc and it really is only time.

                Since I am fortunate enough to have a bike lift, it does make it a little easier to work on.

                  Yay! Another one saved..

                  Good for you Ozzie, take your time, Rome wasn't built in a day. I have a 1978 rolling frame here with half a buggered motor and nothing else. One day it will be an as new stock standard XS1100E winning concourses all over the place. It will cost me thousands but over a few years I'll hardly notice and I'll end up with two classics to leave to some lucky bastard in my will.

                          well, got her stripped down, ready to flip. Hopefully have her back on the road this weekend.

                            REPAIR IT

                            it took me all winter and part of the summer and my wife yelling it cost to much and your spending to much on that bike! but I am glad I did it now it looks and runs great .
