1982 XJ1100. What is that sound that I hear coming from under the seat when I turn the ignition key on? I only notice it when I start the bike cold. In a car, I would think it was an electrically activated fuel pump. Is it just some sort of ignition relay?

On my XS (the noise actually came from under the gas tank) it ws the headlight relay buzzing. I replaced it.

The headlight relay would buzz (on/off/on/off/on/off rapidly) at anything below 2000rpm. I assume it was just dieing. When I first got the bike going it didn't work at all.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

It's more of a quick sliding sound and then a click. Nothing seems to change when it does that, I'm just curious as to what it could be and if it's something that might be close to failing.

Ditto, to olebiker's reply. I have an XJ1100j and no noise.

I would think it is an indication of failing. You should get a replacement to have available when needed.

Replacement what? What do you think is making the noise?

              Hey Bruce,

TAKE THE SEAT OFF, and then turn it on and listen to see where it's coming from, could be TCI, could be several other relays that are under there around the frame near the battery! The sliding sound may just be a relay energizing, and then the click is it actually throwing into contact!
