  • Main Needle Removal?

    Hey Guy's

How do you remove the main needle? I'm running way rich and I have to lean it out. I looked at the whole unit and I must be missing something so before I put some elbow grease into it I figure I should ask. Bike is a 79 Special.

    Hey Nem,

Just wanted to be sure of what you are talking about. See below photos:

In the top photo, the part "D" is called the Main Jet Needle, but we often refer to it as the Main Nozzle, and to remove it, you remove the MAIN JET from the bowl side, and then remove the top of the carb, the vacuum slide, and then you push the nozzle up thru the carb body being careful of the locating pin in the carb body.

But if you are talking about the slide needle that is part of the vacuum slide, there are some C clips down inside the slide that lets you remove it, and then change the rich/lean c-clip location.

      Hey T.C.

Right on the money again. I didn't notice it before and the book had no pictures. I almost yanked the plastic retainer out trying to get to that needle.

      Thanks a bunch!

It's good that you didn't do it per Clymers by pulling it up with needlenose plyers! You could really bugger the nozzle, making burrs, and causing possible sticking of the main needle.
