  • Reconditioning Tank Emblems / Badges

Figured I'd shoot out a question to see if anyone had success reconditioning the paint on their tank emblems. My bike is almost completely rebuilt and I'd like to save a few $$ and headaches by not buying aftermarket emblems.

    Any input?

    Hey Chadkid,

I seem to remember Ken Talbot had written some pretty extensive instructions on refinishing the emblems and included pics. I think it was somewhere in the Tech tips section.

          emblems

Hi.I bought a pair of golf cart emblems off of ebay, 5 dollars each. They have the chrome lettering,if you can live with that and fit perfectly.Just punch in golf cart emblem for your search. If you want a custom color for your emblems, clean them the best you can,use adhesion promoter in spray can, spray letter color first, then background color, usually black.carefully wet sand the letters till you see your first color, then clear coat.Should look alright and custom.Good luck, Brad

Even with the new link, the one with the ~ in the url, you might still occasionally have trouble. My ISP is my local cable company, and for the past few months that have been changing their service all around preparing to go to a full digital service. Our TV channels are all oer the place from day to day, and my pages seem to get lost a few times a day. With any luck, this will stabilize soon.

                  How about gold leaf?

If you are hobby inclined, try gold leaf. I did this on my tank emblems several years ago and they are just showing some wear.

Bought gold leaf and the adhesive sizing (I think that is what they call it) at a hobby shop. Did them one evening on the kitchen table, covered them with clear spray paint the next day and put them back on.

It is a bit tedius work but if you screw it up, just sand it off and try again.

                    Hey TADracer,

A buddy suggested the gold leaf. I guess you sanded and sprayed black first, for the background?

Sanded, yes but did not spray anyghing black. the black in the low spots was still in good shape. Then I spread the adhesive out on some paper and rolled the emblem on that so the adhesive didnt get into the little low spots. I did one or two letters at a time.
