  • long ride

A couple of friends and I went riding last night. It was the first time I had the bike on the interstate. She performed great, had the speedo nailed at 80mph and there was still throttle left in her. Rode a total of 72 miles and man was my hands sore from the vibrations. It was a great night for riding and cruising around.

    hands sore from the vibrations
    Should check into that.
None of my XSes seem to have a vibration problem.
Have read here it can be related to different things.
    Loose or bad motor mount.
Think one guy posted that his exhaust was touching frame and was causing a handle bar vibration. Would do a general inspection of the front end too.

I'll check into it. But i dont think it was much more then road vibration. Having 2 surgries on both wrist dosent help much either.

Since this was the first time on the big road at speed, you do tend to hold on tighter,at least I do than just tooling about town or the back roads plus having to hold the throttle steady for a period of time it just might be your wrists just haven't built up the necessary muscle to do that or maybe your throttle cable needs a little lube.

That was me. I have also found a resonance of the header pipes that cause the vibrations at 3400 and 5100RPM. I have temporarily clamped aluminum blocks between #3 and #2 pipes about mid way to collector. Also the some on #1 and #4. This helped the vibration at 3400RPM and eased the resonance at 5100RPM. The intention is to locate the blocks at the highest vibration point then weld a brace to the headers at that location, mine are painted black, chromed is another problem. When the header pipes are off the bike and we try to install them the pipes do not align very well to the head. This may be the problem of applying tension to the header pipes that starts all this problem. Any help or comments are very much welcome.

            Throttle rocker

            Hi bikenut,

Have you tried a throttle rocker? It's a piece of plastic that wraps around your twist grip with a tab that fits snugly into your palm. I have one and it's great, you lose the death grip and just lean into it.

                Relief!

Five surgerys on the left wrist and three on the right one (with plate, pins and bone graft).

Solution: throttle rocker AND Vista-Cruise throttle lock!!!!!! And large foam grips.

You can also put weights in the ends of your handlbars. It won't eliminate the vibration, but it will change the frequency and usually move it to a different speed.

                    Vibrations

"had the speedo nailed at 80mph and there was still throttle left"

Sounds like it's only running on 2 or 3 cylinders. At 80 mph you should only be about 1/4 throttle and the excelleration at that point is nothing short of unbelieavable. Anything less means it's not running right yet. That would explain the vibrations too.

Just my $0.02. My 79 was running great, or so I thought. Hands would get a bit num after about half an hour riding. Didn't really think about it till after I synced the carbs. What a difference, bike running really great now, can see images clearly in mirror, and hands feel alot better. BTW, don't know how I could ride without a throttle lock. Does anyone know if yamaha ever make one for the 11? I think the one I have has their logo stamped on it.

that would explain why, when i gave it full throttle it seem to lurch forward like it had turbo on it. Will have to check into the carbs.

I also put weights in the bar ends but isolated them from the bar ID to in effect create a DYNAMIC ABSORBER effect. However the rubber I used was to soft and did not get the effect. Next is to remove and use harder rubber washers. Right now the rubber used is 10~12 durometer. The weight was stainless steel 9/16" dia by 2-3/4" long.

One and four are welded and two and three are clamped to colletor/muffler.
Make sure two and three can move a little in/out with the clamp loose.
I set a block of wood under pipes and get them close, then use a bunge cord to hold back close to mounted posistion.
Install one and four first and then two/three. I made a long allen wrench/socket so I could then torqe em properly with out havng to fight for space between pipes. Install back to bracket and then tighten clamps on two and three. (works for me )

I have a hard time getting two and three mounted onto the studs. They seem to be to close and need to be spread apart in order to get them onto the studs. After on, they do not move at all. I also have an 5" Allen wrench mounted onto the torque wrench which, as you said, helps a lot.

After mounting do you think that I can heat the header pipes near the collector to stress relieve the tension so they can then move freely onto the studs?
Would this help with the vibrations?
Any help is very much appreciated.
