  • %^%^@ Carbs

I'm about ready to put the BC up for sale right now. I got carb rebuild kits from Old Bike Barn, replaced all the float valves, seats, cleaned everything again and triple checked the float heights (26.5mm above the gasket surface). Still throwing gas out of number two.

Anyone have a good set of carbs they would like to sell or know of a good reliable source? Old Bike Barn has a rack of 33 MM Keihens for 689. Kind of steep.

I see them on Ebay a lot, but I am a little leary of Ebay as a source for carbs.

Is there any possibility this problem is not carbs, but possibly vacuum causing leaks?

OK the only way the carbs will throw gas out the air intake side is if the float valve on the offending carb is LEAKING or the air venting is plugged. The whole situation will be made much worse if the fuel petcocks are also leaking. SO take the carbs and air box off the bike and confirm that the air venting is COMPLETELY clear including the parts in the air box. don't just check the air supply lines from the carbs to the box.
TEST the fuel petcocks for proper operation and rebuild if necessary.
ADD FUEL FILTERS if you haven't already. It only takes the SMALLEST particle from your tank to jam a seat open.
Make sure the floats move completely free on the shafts they should be a dead loose fit on those float shafts.

I had the same problem with mine. It turned out that the float was dropping too far down in the bowl and wedging. There is a tang on one side of the float that you can adust to make the float drop the same as the rest. With the float bowls off and the carbs upsided down lift each float up and measure them. I would bet the offending carb will lift higher than the rest.

I just sold a set on on eBay and have another set going up for sale. The last set went for $210.

The carbs I'm selling next were professionally cleaned and rebuilt by a dealer then cleaned and rebuilt again by a vintage specialist then sent to Red Bandit (a member of this forum) who replaced the O-rings and idle screws then put them on his own bike for a test drive and said they ran perfectly.

79XS11F and Axel have ridden with me when I had these carbs on my bike.

Watch for them on eBay early next week. If you're looking for a cheaper solution, consider shipping your carbs to Red Bandit. It'll be cheaper than buying another set.

This makes 7 tear downs for me. I need to check the Vent Tubes as suggested, but new carbs will have to wait since I am about to switch from a job with Bi Weely pay checks to one that pays monthly. I start 1 Oct, and won't get a check until Nov 15. Oucccchhhhhhh. Once the money starts though, life gets good.

Any body have an opinion on the Keihin 33 MM Side draft carbs available from Bike Barn? $669 is pricey and I am sure I'd have to go to Stacks instead of the stock air box.

                BAD FLOATS

Recently started cleaning up extra carb parts for a future build and weighted down 8 brass floats and soaked in the tank for a few days .I was amazed that 4 of them took in liquid [leaked]. Will never trust them without doing this in the future like I have in the past.

If your going to go with after market carbs you might as well go for smooth Bores. Doing that will however not change your situation. If you change out the carbs to non stock units you will have a lot of tuning to do to get them just right. I think you will be better off and save a ton of cash by getting to ones you already have working correctly.
