  • xs carbs on xj.

i tried to search but havent come up with alot about the xj due to the search allows 3 charecters or more...

i have two sets of prety trashed 82 carbs and i am missing some stuff to them. i can get a set from an 80 or 81 how would this work with the yics? could i just bypass it and use the carbs as normal or would i have to switch jets out? any tips or advice would be apreciated

    Hey Chris,

The YICS is part of the heads so any carbs will still work with it! You can essentially use any set of carbs on any XS/XJ11, it's just knowing what style/model of carbs as to what jets are needed. The jets are specific to the carbs, not the engine they are mounted on! So...if you find a set of 78-79 carbs, then the mains are stock at 137.5, but with the later 80-81 carbs, the mains go to 110~120 due to a change in how the fuel is shared or not between the main jet and the pilot jet! The 78-79's have 25mm float settings, the 80-81 uses 23mm. The 78-79 have adjustable vacuum slide needles, the 80-81's are essentially preset, but can be adjusted thru insertion of washers, but a little more of a PITA!The vacuum slides are different sizes....smaller in the 78-79 series, but larger=same as XJ's in the 80-81 series! So...getting a later set may allow you to use more of your other carbs spare parts, but are not quite as adjustable!

    Hope this helps!

i think so. my diaprams are almost dry rotted. they are not too rubbery so i may need to soak them in something, and i think the smaller jets are missing, not sure what they are called but they are the ones on the bowl side that are teenie tiny. and the rubber slide part that attatches to the floats are missing as well. so by the time i order all the parts it may be easier just to order the other set from the guy on this site. i think the bodies are ok they are just gummed up because the choke doesn't move and neither does the throttle blades on one of them!

The rubber diaphrams and slides are interchangeable on all the carbs. The XJ has 112.5 mains and 47.5 pilots stock. The bell opening of the carbs is also 54mm... a little bigger than the 52mm XS, so intake boots may not fit right if you go with the XS carbs. You'd also have to replace the enrichener rod out of the carbs since the XJ has the cable and the XS uses the tab with the little spring loaded steel balls on the rod to make it "Click" into different settings. I guess you could use the tab and route your cable out of the way somewhere though. Whatever floats you use.. whether the neoprene or the brass floats... use them in all four carbs. Don't try to mix and match.

If it's mainly just jets you're missing, those are fairly cheap from the right place.

i was talking about the needles that close off the hole not the floats themselves...???

              yep that's it thanks.

does anyone know off the top of their heads what jets come in a jet kit for this bike?
