  • Windjammer Headlight?

I have a 'jammer III that came with the bike.
The PO had taken the headlight from the bucket and "installed" it into the 'jammer.
Problem is: the headlight has an H4 mount in it which is too long for the space in the fairing. His answer was to bend the terminals at 90 degrees and use spade connectors.
Needless to say, I don't approve of this arrangement. Mostly because it's a crappy connection and it trashes the bulb for when I want to run nekkid. I could punch a hole through, but that does not make good sense either.

My question is: since the fairing will only accomodate a sealed beam, what would the best light be to install? It's difficult to get a depth measurement because most places don't list it.

I find that after replacing the plug, a standard automotive 60/55 7" fits. I expect this was the original design intent, but wonder about the pattern, since they are designed for cages.

A stock Halogen should fit in there, no problem. Just look for the sealed beam type of Halogen bulb. It's the extra crap for the removable bulb that is likely in your way.

Personally, I would buy another Halogen, even if you have to bend the pins, and use that for the fairing, and keep your other one for running w/po the fairing. Headlights are chealp and you DON'T want to run a standard light.

Standard bulbs don't thorw much light.

      Halogen for sure

      Yeah, I got a Sylvania H6024ST.
I guess I'll mount it up and see what kind of light it throws.
I took the XS light apart, (PITA) and measure about a 1 inch difference in depth.
I think the difference is the parabolic reflector on the XS light.

I could make a spacer for the bucket, but it would look like caca.
If push comes to shove, I guess I'll get my hole saw out.

All standard 7" auto bulbs are designed to fit in the same hole, or else they wouldn't be 'standard'.

Just go to your local auto store and look at the dozen or so different Quartz haologen bulbs and I am sure most will fit no problem. All should.

I suspect you have some wierd light on the bike now. Not sure what you mean by 'parabolic reflector'.

I have never had any trouble putting a standard bulb, of any type, into a Vetter fairing.

          CRAZ,

From what I gather, the sealed beam lights are more spherical in their reflector design while the H4 type mount utilize a parabolic reflector which is deeper, and throws a narrower beam.
If you sliced one front to rear, the difference would be apparent.

What is/was the OEM headlight for the XS? The light that came with my bike says "KOTTO" on the lens.
This is the only XS I have ever had or took apart, so I really don't know anything other than what I have now.

I did purchase a sealed beam at the auto store, and it fits the fairing fine. I just wondered if there were different lens patterns for motorcycles vs cars.

Not that I know of. There are specialty bulbs available, but Vetter used standard items in his designs, so any standard bulbs should work fine.

The normal H4s were also designed to fit in the same sockets as the pre halogen bulbs, so if you have one with a different shape, I assume it's the oddball.

I have just recently got my hands on a Windjammer III and managed to put the OEM light from my 82 XJ into the fairing without bending pins. I just ground the opening for the connection a little larger to accomodate the H4 bulb "apparatus".

Peronnally....the brighter my light (Halogen vs sealed beam) the better.
