  • figured out the noise

Was over at a friends house last night and we were messing with the bike trying to see where the noise was coming from. Long story short. Its the tranny making the noise. Sounds like something broke off and is rattaling around in there. I have no plans on taking it apart until this winter. I mean it shifts and everything so why mess with it. Good thing I bought that replacement motor.

Hello !!! If your trany LOCKS UP while the bike is being used your could not only blow the bottom of the engine out you could get killed. At least pop off the oil pan and check it out!!!!

OMG I had no idea. Looks like im going to either put the bike up till I get my other engine back or pop off the oil pan. Thanks for the heads up. I didnt know it could get that serious.

Well think about it. Lets say your buzzing down a freeway or highway and the trany LOCKS up and the back wheel locks up with no notice. Even if the trany doesn't come apart in the cases It's a good way to end up going for a "high side" flip. Once the back wheel is locked and moving out of line with the front wheel you got your hands full... big time. So yes at least take off the oil pan and check it out closely. a rattle in the trany could be just about anything from a bad bearing at ether end of ether shaft to a bad gear. Might not even be the trany but better safe and sorry.

            Hey Jason,

I was going to post earlier, but didn't, hopefully this isn't too late, but first, no you don't have to pull the engine. I was wondering exactly where the noise was and how did you hear it? Did you try a piece of wood to use like a stethoscope to help you listen to the engine without getting your ears burnt!?

Just wanted to find out if you were sure about where the sound was, in the bottom of the engine/tranny section, or in the left shift cover, or the middle drive gear box?? Let us know what you find!

I had a friend drive the bike and when he came back I listened and put my hand on the tranny cover, left shift cover. I could slightly feel and hear something. I do have a stethoscope and will use that tomorrow. You can hear the noise even at start up and if I use the choke. I'll try to pin point the noise tomorrow morning and let you know.
