The oil light on my 79sf does this too. I've noticed if you apply the brake it goes out when the brake light comes on. Many times it comes back on upon releasing the brakes but sometimes it'll stay out after a few tries. I've tried different bulbs and checked all the terminals in the circuit but it still persists. Its been years and I've never blown up, figure it may actually be a faulty light checker unit.
