  • Idle Adjustment Tool?

Is there a specialized tool to adjust the idle?

Spent several (~ 8) hours yesterday in the sweltering sun looking for the cause of an extremely low vacuum condition on #1 & #2 carbs. Eventually found 1/4 of the rubber lip on carb holder #2 was no longer of this world. Replaced all 4 carb holders with a set I purchased from Andreas several months ago. Cleaned carbs up and reassembled. Started with a quick sync, then went to adjust idle speed before doing a colortune, sync and final idle speed adjust.

Unfortunately, during the initial idle speed adjustment, I appeared to have damaged the head of the adjustment screw in such a way as to cause it to turn WITHOUT moving the adjuster. Now I get to pull the carbs again, fix or replace the idle speed adjuster and start over.

As a side note, I've never had much luck with making fine adjustments to idle speed with a flat-blade screwdriver and was wanting a more refined tool/method.

    adjustment tool

I hate using the screwdriver to adjust the idle.A special tool would be ideal.

      Hey Brian,

What year is yours, my 79SF has a thumb wheel on the end of the screw that I can reach with a slight amount of contortion.

          Idle adjust tool

I have developed a remote idle adjust. It leaves you with a knob just behind the rt side rear shock. If you're interested PM me.

The thumbwheel on the 80-81 carbs is pointed down, instead of up like the earlier carbs. They are a real pain to get to, but IIRC Planedick's special tool should work on them.

I have a 20 inch long tuners screw driver. It has a very thin DIA and no flare at the end like most slot head drivers have. It is GREAT for getting at the carb adjustment screws where ever they happen to be. I would be lost with out it.
