  • Clutch acting in reverse?

I have a friend who is trying to help a buddy of his do some work on an 1100 special, I haven't seen the bike yet but wanted to ask about this here first.

My friend claims that they replaced the clutch on the special and now it works in reverse, has anyone ever heard of this happening?

I have asked him for more information about what they did, but I would appreciate any pointers from the more knowledgeable folks here.

    Thanks in advance!

Works in reverse? You mean like you have to pull the lever in order to drive and let go to shift? Weird...

If I may say, is the lever in the case facing the right way? That little cover with 2 bolts has the lever that works the clutch, which is supposed to be on the right side of the clutch, towards the front of the bike. My thought is that if that lever is on the wrong side it would do that. I hope I'm making sense here...

Ya, I asked him the same question and he swears that's what it's doing. I haven't gone and looked at the bike myself yet so I don't know if he has the lever in the right place or not. I asked him if he returned it to the original position and he claims he has.

        Hey Tony,

There's a warning in the manual about NOT allowing the lever to rotate during engine clutch case installation, 'cause the 3 little ball bearings inside it that work with the throw out bearing can fall out, and then the lever and throwout bearing can get tilted, etc, and cause it to act funny!

IF they don't have a manual, then they can look at the Dremmel 1st gear fix pictorial, or the extra steel plate repair/mod tech tips to see images of the clutch, and some tips on reassembly and such. Hope they haven't fractured the star plate?

This has me stumped. My friend has a book and swears up and down he followed it to the letter.

There's no avoiding it... your going to have to take it apart and rebuild it to confirm that there is in fact nothing in there the wrong way. For the clutch to be working in reverse the springs would have to be placed in there in some fashion that they are pushing the plates apart instead of together. don't even know if the clutch could be put together in that fashion. the sooner you get in there the better the chances the gasket will be reusable

I know He's doing this work on a friend of his bike and I have been trying to stay out of it as much as possible but it's looking more and more like I'm going to have to get my hands dirty before he messes it up beyond repair.

I have experienced this problem on two difference bikes after fiddling with the clutches. What he means is that if you pull the clutch in too far it starts to engage again. Shoot me a PM and I'll give up the solution.

Please post it here GNEPIG .. I would like to know how this could happen. Lets see .. you pull the lever and center of the clutch is pushed inward to disengage the plates. If the clutch throw is very excessive then what happens .. The back side of the center contacts the back side of the basket??
