Sorry for long post "First one" Been reading this forum since November 06, got all my information without even having to post a thread. Bought my XJ1100 in January Been working on it ever since. Would like to thank all of you for all the helpfull information this forum is excellent you guys know your stuff. Went to a local yamaha dealer got some bad advice on using Dyno-jet kits hopefully they work out ok. Things that I have done repainted tank and fairing, recovered seat, rebuilt carbs, stainless steel brake lines, rebuilding calipers at this time waiting for new stainless steel pistons having made custom by friend. Havent even got to ride it yet been waiting on pistons for two months! Didnt realize how much money it would cost me originally paid $1350.00 for the bike now up close to $2500.00, but wanted one since I was young so it all works out. Got it running but backfires untill it warms up has a hesitation at about 2000rpm, but dont have the carbs sync'd yet dont have a YCIS tool or color tune kit. Probably cheaper to just take it to a Yamaha dealer. As soon as I get to ride I will let you know.

Hey there Heat Man Al....abama,
You don't really need a colortune, and you can MAKE your own YICS tool very easily, check the tech tips! You'll probably end up paying more $$ because the most likely inexperienced dealer mech will not know much about proper tuning the XS11's carbs, and then you'll just have to tune them yourself anyways!!
Save your $$, buy a set of vacuum gauges and do it yourself!
BTW, congrats on your machine, you're going to love it!

Totally agree with TopCat....I have a colortune and prefer to "do it by ear" anyway. You can get a cheap vacuum sync from JC Whitney and DIY. And like TopCat said...save yourself a ton of $. BTW dealers in my area won't even look at a 27 year old bike. And. most of the mechanics are younger than our bikes!XS 1100 LG

ok here goes.bought a carb stick.made a ycis tool.got the carbs sinked.still dont have brakes fixed but couldnt wait any longer took it for a ride I live in the country so it wasnt that unsafe. after it warms up it ran very strong but when its cold it pops (backfires) on the right side.took the carbs back off & recleaned. it was running lean so i changed the pilot jet to 50 had 47.5 left the k&l main jet it was a little bigger than the 120 i had bought just incase.i have k&n pod filters 4 in to2 jordine turn out exhaust 2 turns out on needles. did away with the octi The bike only has 10000 miles. IM thinking i may have a valve ajustment problem. any advice on what to check next?XJ1100J;

Valve adjustment being out will not make the exhaust "pop". I am guessing that this happens when downshifting or when you let off the throttle? It is most likely jetting or air leaks or both.
If you want to check the plugs take it out for a run and get it to full operation temperature. Have a plug wrench with you. kill the engine with the kill switch while pulling in the clutch at the same time when the "popping" is happening. Check the plugs after stopping and see what they look like.

Hey Heat,
Many folks have reported that after putting on aftermarket pipes, because they breath better, even with richer jetting, they often do pop a little during decel when you close off the throttle plates!
Also, popping when cold is common. Your enrichener circuit may not be totally clean? Have you seen the posts about the small jet that's in the float bowl, and can get gummed up and prevent proper fuel flow thru them into the enrichener circuit which can cause difficult cold starting, as well as possibly popping and such until it gets warmed up, and you are using the pilot circuit vs. the enrichener circuit!?
As Rob has said, you'll want to do a throttle chop to read the plugs, not just reading them during idle!

sorry didnt give enough info. when its cold it pops at 1000;2000;3000 all the way up. but when you ride it up & down the road get it warmed up it runs strong. 20mph wot broke traction. I did check the pilot circuit jets in the float bowl their clean blew air & carb cleaner went all the way through. swiched the plug wires miss stays on right side. also has new oem coils. maybe its just the way these bikes are. I thought the yics helped this problem. Ive seen the vedio of bikes on this forum they dont seem to be missing maybe there already warm.XJ1100J;
