I used POR-15 engine paint. It's holding up very well. I've had it on there for about 5 years now. Powdercoating would be hard to deal with when trying to make all the moving parts work properly again.

have you counted all the tiny holes and passages that absolutely have to be masked off if your carbs are to actually work again after powdercoating them?
Painting them is daft enough. It's what you do right after making sure the genuine gold leaf pinstriping on the tank & sidecovers has been placed over chinese red lacquer for the glow through effect.

The first one shows what they can look like with just paint.
I, too, would be a bit concerned about gas spillage/leakage damaging the finish! But, the baking of the powder coat would probably require the remove of the butterfly shafts/seals as well as the enrichener plungers. IF you do powder coat them, take some photos and tell us all about it!

I need to figure out what color im going to paint the bike first. I have a extra set of carbs that came with the engine i picked up last night that came out of a bike with 11,000 miles but has been sitting for the last 5 years.
I have to take the new engine into the shop tomorrow to have it gone through. I would hate to polish the motor and install it to find out it has bent valves or spun bearinings.
Only going to coat me 60.00 for him to look at it and go from there. If money allows i might just go full blown and have the 1500 big bore kit installed. but that just depends on how the motor looks after its torn down. Thanks for the links TopCat. Now im on the look out for a place to buy the 1500 kit just to get a idea of the cost.
I don't remember seeing any links to the 1500 kit, there really isn't one. IN the Other Bike forum,(search for THOR) there was a thread posted by a guy that had some custom jugs made to allow it to be bored to 1500cc, but that was some very $$ custom work that he did.
The biggest kit is 1196 from Wiseco, runs a touch over $400.00 for it! But the stock engine is pretty strong on its own, and if it's not very worn, then you'd be wasting $$ putting in the big bore when you could ride and run it for years first. IF you decide that you want to keep it, then you could buy the big bore kit for LATER!! JAT!

I have also heard about a large bore kit that requires new sleeves and the alloy block be bored out to receive them. Very costly type of work to be doing and you would also have to work the cams and head for that big a change. I would not do it but if you have your heart set on a bore out go with the 1179 or 1196 kits. i was told by Wisco to never go to the largest over size because your done when you do.
As for carb powder coating .. To get a proper and nice job you would have to completely disassemble the carbs ... ever nut and bolt and spring etc. tape them up very carefully and then have them coated and put them back together.

reading your various posts, (big bore kit for one of the most powerful bikes of it's day, powder-coating parts that don't need it, agonizing over a colour choice etc.) it seems to me you don't want a bike, you want a Meccano set. Put it together and ride it, man! Summer is nearly over.

It is together and i do ride it every day "weather permitting" I have a extra motor that im going to work on this winter and tossing around a few ideas. And whats a Meccano anyway?

I would think it would have been better if the inventor would have named it MECHANO...then the root word would have been more easily recognized and the product deduced, but I guess it was a little before my time!
MRO, that's only 7cc larger, about 0.9cc per cylinder. Not sure where it would be obtained, either bore or stroke? Was that value from the PO? Wonder if they did the math wrong?
I know the difference in the 1179 and 1196 kits is a 0.5mm increase in the bore. The 1196 is 17cc more than the smaller one.
