Well actually you DO want to partly crush those exhaust GASKETS to make an air tight seal. I use high temp anti seaze brake grease behind and in front of them when I install new gaskets. One would think that the grease would just be blown out of the way but it doesn't. Maybe if there was a blockage in the exhaust system but that doesn't happen.
