    Small hole in collector

    I was cleaning up my stock exhaust system when I noticed a small (less than one quarter inch) hole underneath one of the collectors near where the header pipes connect. It would be very easy to wrap some muffler bandage around it but I was wondering if anyone knows a more permanent fix (apart from buying a new collector)

    I've cleaned up the hole to shiny bare metal and I have no welding equipment.

    Any ideas?

    1982 XJ1100J

    I just checked my part numbers. Turns out that I'm running an exhaust system off a 1982 XJ1100J!

    I wondered why the mufflers wouldn't line up with mounting point on the rear passenger peg bracket, I've had to mount them about an inch forward of that rubberised mounting point through the large triangular hole in front of it using large washers. Still, it works.

    I always thought this system I'm using came off an XS1100 Special. Learning all the time.

        AU$37.00 delivered. Sounds a bit expensive but it's hard to find in auto stores around here.

          What a rip off artist!

          Hey Stralya, that stuff is only a few bucks here in the US, and they even have a STRONGER version as well as their OEM version! I just checked, it'll cost about $8.00US to ship first class mail/package for an 8oz weight to AUSTRALIA, plus the cost of the product, and I'd be happy to send you some so help you NOT GET RIPPED OFF!

          Here's their actual web site, although the Auto Strength isn't shown, but they talk about their Industro strength, not sure if it's the same thing. They also show a product similar to something I've used called Magnasteel, they call it their STICK, I was able to fix a motor housing on an old firebird's pop up headlight system!

            I think I'll take you up on that TC. I'm going to try welding it up. petejw knows a good welder over where he lives so I'll give that a try but the way things have been going lately I'll more than likely have to fashion a new sump plug or gear box or block of flats or small suburb so one way or another some JB Weld will come in handy sooner or later.

            PM me with the price and how you want me to pay. No hurry though, I told the good people at the Eiffel Tower to give me a couple of weeks to complete their extension

              Wow, that is crazy.

              I go through a coupla tubes of that stuff every few months. It's the bee's knees, as Lois Griffin would say. (Family Guy)

              It's available everywhere here in the U.S. All it really is is a specially made 2-part epoxy compound with some kind of filler material in it. Very strong, can be drilled and tapped like metal once it sets.

              They make a putty version of it too. I used that once to replace a 1/2" freeze plug that had popped out on an old chevy engine block. As far as I know, it's still holding. I know a couple of people that have used it to fill in the cracks on a busted cylinder head, repaired a cracked thermostat housing, and all kinds of other stuff like that. It can handle (IIRC) up to 600 degrees F.

                You think that's crazy? I actually had to import a tube of Threebond!

                I'm sure there are proprietory products here that do the same job but I have no clue what they are and there's no forum like this where blokes have tested the stuff and report results.

                  I had the hole mig welded today. Only cost $10.00, pete knows the right people!

                    I'm pretty sure those holes are normally there. Maybe for condensation run off? On my special they're on both sides.
