  • E-Model runnin rich

There are only 2 XS1100's in Madison SD. MIYAMI and the E-model that seemed to look and run good from a distance. I've been tellin the guy who owns it, if he wanted to give his bike the once over, to bring it over and we'd check it out. He kept refuseing. He eventually took it to the local bike shop here in town, Paid 'em good money, Got the bike back and still ran like crap. he finally brought the bike over to my place. He said that the shop told him that he had bad rings in two jugs, but, no smoke. Well, mabee a little bit of black smoke. did a compressin test. cyl.#1=155, #2=148, #3=160, #4=160. Compression's good, Mabee to good. Top end is kinda noisy. Could use a valve clearance job. Anyway, I pulled the carbs and found that ALL of the screw driver slots on the jets were mashed up pretty good. It had 3 of the 4 floats replaced, The floats were set anywhere from 20mm to over 30 mm. Carb#2 was the old float. Carb#3 had one float mount pin mounting ear broken off. Pin was tight and the float was adjustable. ( I wouldn't trust it. ) I reassembled cause I didn't want to go to far into them because of the damage I've found. Sunk up the carbs as close as I could get them and geuss what,,,, It still ran like crap. Fouling out plugs. I also found a large rust gash on the left side. Aprox 2" long in front of the kick stand. He said he's tired of it and said he'll let it go for $900.00 I said I wouldn't give him a penny over $500.00. That was before pulling the carbs. Is this fair in you readers eye's????
Is there possibly something I over looked outside of totally stripping down the carbs and doing the valves??
After finding what I've found, I really don't think I'll give him more then $400.00.
If you all don't think that's a fair offer, Then I won't offer.

I would let him know he has two options, Sink about $500 into it with you doing the work, and he'll have a good running bike, or dump it for about $400.00, as that's all it's worth in present condition.
I would think a set of carbs and a valve adjustment will have it running well. Do a check on the frame, and weld if needed and you should be good to go. JMHO

I think Czekus is saying he sync'd the carbs as best he could, but he still doesn't sound too confident in that. With all the work that appears to have been done, I'd bet somebody has put in a carb kit, complete with oversized K&L jets. That could explain the running like crap scenario.

I would agree $400 to $500 might be a reasonable value "as is".

          Only if...

there are no cosmetic damages and all side covers are there, good stock eshaust, decent paint, and no rust in the tank. Just some of the things to tell him about when you're discounting his price. I'll bet that the sync wasn't done right and that's the reason it isn't running right.

Thanks,, I should have thought of that but had a brain cramp or something.
I should see the guy sometime within the next couple of weeks and I'll educate him on this a little.

Unless he's lurkin,, In that case, he already knows........
