  • XJ1100 Rt. Front Caliper

The threaded mount holes on my right front caliper are stripped. Can I drill and re-tap the holes? The top mount goes all the way through, I do not see that one as being a problem, but the bottom hole only goes about half way through. Will it hurt to drill the mount holes on the fork a little bigger to put a bigger bolt through them?

I have never used a heli coil, but would that be a better option?

I also noticed that the right caliper is off set and too close to the rotor. How do I correct that?

The pads are installed correctly, I am wondering if there is a shim missing on the axle to space the fork out a little bit to center the caliper on the rotor?

I can't answer the other questions, but as far as the caliper not lining up, loosen the pinch bolt on the right fork that secures it to the axle. Move the fork in and out slightly to get it aligned between the pads right, then tighten the pinch bolt back.

Adjusting the caliper/rotor spacing: You can use a big screwdriver and gently pry, for lack of a better word, the fork leg over until the caliper is centered on the rotor, then finish tightening the pinch bolt.

Don't know why you couldn't helicoil the threads, I've had to do it before on something I can't remember, but it wasn't on brakes. If you do that I would check the bolt on a regular basis for a long while to make sure it stays tight.

      That's all I got.

Do I need to loosen the castle nut, or do I just loosed the pinch bolt and "pry" the fork over a bit?

Just loosen the pinch bolt. The order of tightening the front axle bolts are:
          1. Castle nut
          2. Pinch bolt
If you try it the other way, the handling and braking WILL be off!!

I can't remember the order, you could probably search the site and find it. Just thinking (probably thinking wrong) about it I would say to tighten the castle nut first so that you don't pull the other fork leg over (with the pinch bolt tight) as the castle nut is snugged down. But I'm probably full of it. I'll have to check my manual tonight and let you know tomorrow if no one else chimes in. If you don't have a manual yet, I would start tracking one down.
