  • Exhaust header flange bolts

    Hi all,

For starters I have an '81 SH with a pristine stock exhaust sytem which has snapped the inside exhaust header flange bolt on cylinder #1. From what I see, that these fasteners are Allen bolts, not nuts on studs.

The Clymer manual refers to these as bolts, although the cylinder head microfiche shows studs and the exhaust microfiche shows nuts and calls them such in the adjoining parts list.

If this was not updated on the microfiches thus using Allen bolts, does anyone know of the OEM parts number. Better yet the specs of the Allen bolt, eg: length, thread pitch, etc. so that I could possibly get these from a local fastener supplier.

    Thanx in advance.

On both my XS's (78 standard and 80 special) they use studs with allen nuts at the exhaust flange.

Pat, thanks for confirming the means of fastening. What I have in hand is the broken stud with the Allen nut attached so that it kind of looks like an Allen bolt. The Clymer manual's reference on page 158 calls it a bolt and not a nut which had me wondering.

I was also contemplating that this might be an Allen nut using studs the normal way like my XJ700N.

        Thanx again,
