  • Shifting

Taking into consideration that I went from a full face helmet to a half (turtle shell) when I got this bike, I've noticed that the 11 shifts very loudly. Is this normal and I'm hearing it very loudly because my ears aren't covered?

Heh, I almost have the same problem with my Virago.

I bought a good used set of stock exhaust, after riding for a couple years with a totally rotted out system.

Now I hear all kinds of wierd noises!!!

The really fun part is, that now when I am anywhere near a harley (or any other overly loud bike) when it fires up I run over and say:

'Hey, I had that same problem, I got a good used set of pipes off Ebay!'

Should see the look on thier face.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

If you think yours is clunking loudly into gear.... ride right beside another XS/XJ and listen to theirs. You both are sitting there thinking.... "Wow!! Mine surely isn't THAT loud shifting!?" lol. Yup.. they are clunky. If you think something's amiss... put the other helmet back on and ride for a few miles. You'll realize it's been there all along.

They sound much better with the ear muffs attached on the helmet in the fall and winter...

          Sounds about right

          Hi Cap'n
back in the early 1930s an owner wrote to Ettoire Bugatti saying
"I bought a Bugatti and the engine sounds like a bucket of ball bearings being poured onto a steel plate."
          The reply said
"From what you describe, the engine is running perfectly"
And if you were to write to Yamaha saying "My XS11 shifts like a Russian tractor" - - -
