  • Need TIRE help

Another tire thread? Well I checked and could not find the answer I needed answering in the old threads. Went to Discount Tire (On the Border) to see tires. Talked with Tom, owner, and because I commute and do some twister's he recommended the Dunlap DT401, made for HD and also has Harley on the tire, well no one is going to read the rear tire anyway. The tire is made for heavy machines for cruising, harder center soft sides for turning, have you ever run one of these and your opinion's are needed. I could also get the DT404 but he said that it will not give me the mileage the DT401 will. The DT401 will get about 10K to 12K on the slabs I commute on, says he. The current DT404 I have on the bike has 6.5K miles and is worn out. Checked the tire pressure at 25PSI and brought it up to 41PSI per the tire info. The low pressure also contributed to the low mileage. My front is the DT404 match.
Absolutely any help will be greatly appreciated as this forum has yielded many tips to help me get this bike running again.

    Dell82,
I seem to remember someone had run a HD tire on his special. The name on the sidewall does not say much, but check the load rating! As long as it will handle about 800+ pounds, you should be good. I am running the Elite II on the rear of my bike, and I've had about 12-15K on the tires. I do have a standard, so I need the 17", not the 16" you get to run. The front should still match the rear, as the big difference is the load capacity of the HD tire.

Diver Ray. Thanks for the reply. I made a mistake in the numbers of the tires. The HD tire is the old D491 which was discontinued and is now the D401 with the HD name on it. It has 12/32" of tread depth and stiffer side walls. while the GT501 has 8/32", Elite3 has 10/32" and D404 has 9/32".
The load caring capacity is D401=805, D404=677, Elite3=830 and the GT501=675.
I guess I will try the D401 @ $129.00 and see how it handles.

        tire pressure

        Hi Dell,
Clymers sez 25psi for the rear tire if you weigh less than 198lbs or 36psi if you are sturdier than that.
The 41psi you are reading on the tire is the tire maker's maximum recommended pressure which is not necessarily the pressure your tire should be at.
