When you're starting the bike, what looks normal for the mechanism? Should the pickup coils be moving back and forth? Should the plate with TDC markings be sitting still? Clymers doesn't elaborate much on the subject.

Question about Pickup Coil/Vaccuum Advance

The pickup coils move on the timing plate, that's what allows it to change the timing/advance. However, I've also NOT looked at mine during startup, so I can't tell you, but I would think that there shouldn't be that much vacuum going to the advance unit during startup to cause it to fluctuate much. Just need to make sure that the hose is connected to the #2 carb BODY metal port, not the intake boot port, and check to make sure that the vacuum pot is holding vacuum. IF the above is true, then perhaps the slight oscilation is normal!? Any real GURU's want to chime in on this?!
